UGH, slow computers suck

I'm stuck with my sister's computer tonight and its freakin horrible. 1.3GHz P4, 256MB RAM, Geforce 2 MX, and 160GB HD. Everything runs so slow and it has USB 1.1, so transferring 700MB took about 15 minutes. I'm also burning a CD at 8x which takes another 10+ minutes.

This computer was a top of the line Dell just a few years ago, but it's unbearably slow (for me) now. I take my newer computer for granted. The sad thing is that my sister spends 90% of her time (probably as much as me on the computer) at home on this thing because she's a web developer and shops, e-mails, and instant messages like theres no tomorrow, yet she won't even buy a new one though she has the money 😕 I can probably build her a nice dual core rig for less than $800.

haha...i feel your pain, but mine is probably worse. i had to run on a pIII 500mhz with 128MB RAM, integrated video, and some HD with X amount of space in it i forget. had to back up all the files (took over an hour) but fortunately, windows xp at least RUNS on it.

:Q

1.3GHz P4's were NEVER top of the line. They were bottom rung when they were introduced, 1.7's were the top of that crop, and that crop sucked.

And speaking as a computer refurbisher, that thing is RAWX. P3-700/128/10gb is PLENTY to do the stuff your sister does (we presently have something like 1200 machines with that exact config in stock, they're excellent workhorses)

I actually spend a decent ammount of time messing around on a P3 700 w/ 64mb of SD Ram and integrated intel video and a 10gb HDD. It's a dinky old gateway with Windows ME that doesn't even have a network card, I had to buy a USB Ethernet adapter for it.

It's not that bad, really guys.

... Your computer is the BARE MINIMUM that would avoid getting dropped from our refurbishment program, and if you were to send it our way, it would probably just get raped for the HDD and RAM, and the rest recycled, because I'm getting sick of the Celeron badges ****** up the performance curve.

If you state such things out loud, your PC will develop an inferiority complex and attempt to retaliate.

my main rig died during a move so im stuck on a p2 450 XEON, 512mb ram.. i put a 16x dvd drive, IDE card and a radeon 9250 in it and it does what i need it to (backup my files, web and poker), you're chilling, she probably got spyware on there.

i'm on a:
Athlon 800mhz slot-A
256MB PC-133
ATI Rage 128
onboard sound
45GB hdd (5400)

not a bad rig...just can't run cool games on it, but for everything else it works good.

OP, for her needs, it's probably fine. Since you say she has money, $40 isn't a big deal, throw a 512MB stick of RAM in there to help overall performance.

If she doesn't have a problem with it, why would she spend money to upgrade it?
I used to build computers, and the last one that I built for myself was a 1.4 gHz Athlon back in 2001. Up until January, I was still using that system for myself (when I bought the cheapest Sempron that would run in this motherboard in order to sell my Athlon).
Would I like a faster machine? Sure! Would I be willing to spend $1000 on it? No! $500? No!
