So a friend of a friend is having issues with his computer..firefox/ie can't open, just crashes or something like that, so he's looking for help, and somehow ends up finding about my ultra-1337 skills and asks if I can help him.

We're supposed to meet up tonight to watch the tourney, and he's going to bring his laptop over so I can take a look at it. Oh goodie

Not that he wasn't really nice about it and all, but bleccch.

Tell him he needs to bring a case of beer. I don't mind doing freebies occasionally for friends, but a friend of a friend either needs to bring it in to the shop, or sometimes I'll let them slide with buy pizza/beer or something.

My brother in law and myself both go through this, so there's a bit of an understanding.

If I refer someone to him with car trouble, he gets to refer someone to me for a computer problem.

Now, my dad's an electrician. He charges an hourly rate. :)

I do this all the time. Got through my first 2 years of college without paying for a drop of booze

"A friend of a friend." I always say no to these requests. Politely, but firmly. If you're a friend I'll help out, but none of this "Hey, so and so said you're handy with computers, can you fix mine?". Otherwise the crap never ends. I just tell them to call the manufacturer.

repeat after me.

"I don't know what is wrong with your computer, nor can I fix it. sorry."

I finally told my best friend in the entire world - "dude, if you call me one more time about a computer problem I'm gonna pound you"

Everytime i work on a friend's computer, they buy me beer, or food. If its a friend of a friend(like my sister's neighbor) I charge. I told my sister's neighbor I would charge $35 an hour to fix her comp that neededs windows reinstalled, took me an hour and she gave me $50.

Tell him you can't fix it after about 20 mins, and
send him to any Computer Shop in the Yellow pages. ;)
