damn that sucks..

call the management and complain. You won't cause a scene then.

I remember there is one time we went to a restraunt and the service is so bad that we didn't enjoy our meal at all.

so before we leave all of us placed a quarter on the table and grab our glasses of water and flip them right on the table. So in order to take the quarter out they have to spill the water. then we left

Okay... I read 90% of the posts... and have realized that some of you are apparently cheap bastards. Leaving the tip is part of our culture... it's the way it works. Don't like it, go live in a different world. If you're in the same world as the rest of us, 15% for average service. It's expected, it's already factored into the pay for the waitress (who has to share it with the busboy and bartender.... seems few mentioned the bartender, making me think many of the replies came from the under 21 crowd who don't quite understand the world yet) For average service, the tip should be 15% No less. For excellent service, up to 25%. For poor service, 10% (you're screwing the busboy and the bartender if you leave less). If the service is really poor, complain to the management.... I had a waiter fired the next day because he had the busboy bring the dinner to me and my wife, and never came to our table again after taking our order (most expensive meal on the menu - surf and turf)

Some of you point out that there's no law that says you have to pay 15% (for average service).
You're right.
But, if you don't, you're not only exercising your legal rights, but you're also being an a**.

p.s. If you give crappy tips for excellent service, I hope the waiters and waitresses remember you and spit in your food next time you eat there.

We were at a steakhouse yesterday and the service was less then par. The steak I ordered was uncooked in the middle. Not a little to bloody uncooked, but cold and raw. The waitress was annoyed at us the whole time, we had difficulty getting refills on our drinks, and she did not seem to like it that we didnt want dessert.

So we leave, we leave a small tip, because people wanted to, but not the full 15%. One of the girls we were with forgot her cellphone and went up to get it when the waitress stopped her and demanded that she leave the full 15% tip. Being a timid nice girl she gave the waitress the few extra dollars and left.

Bah. Tipping is a reward for good service. I am going to have to write this place a letter and see if anything comes of it.

I agree with you. Service industry people are not entitled to tips, by nature a tip is reqard for going the extra mile, for good service.

Best service I ever had was at an East Side Mario's in Canada (it's an italian/steakhouse variety trendy kind of chain).

We went as a group (4 early 20 guys, each with our gfs) and they gave us a waitress who had just started that day and had never waited before. She was talkative, but not in the annoying way, kept us up to par on drinks, salad, and breads, and stopped to make sure we were okay just enough times. One of my friends had ordered a steak well done, and it came medium rare. He had it sent back to be recooked, and when the girl brought it back she said that because of the delay she wouldn't charge either him or his girlfriend for dinner or their current drinks, and include a free dessert.

My friend, who is probably one of the nicest guys I know, offered her the cost of the meal in a tip straight to her. The girl rejected, saying that she had accidently wrritten the order down wrong, and that she didn't feel like she deserved any tip at all, especially not a big one. She left, my friend pulled out his wallet, added another $10 to the meal sized tip and left it on the table.

Awesome meal, with one if the nicest, most honest, helpful, and non-greedy waitresses I've ever seen.

What's up with this tipping threads.

They are all the same as all the other tipping threads.

If you take all of them together, you could write a summary of ATOT's ideals of tipping.

CC company sent me a copy of the restarant copy of the tab, and long behold, they just voided the previous transaction, and charged whatever they felt like. They did this many times according to the CC company. Lets just say they become "cash only" like many other asian places.

I think you are viewing this in totally wrong manner. You think these asian places are unfortunate because they are cash only? You think the CC companies punish them by not allowing them to use the credit processing service? Think again friend. Cash only businesses can claim low income or even losses. There are no records. It's all under the table. Who's to say they took in $1000 today or $10,000. I should know, I know restaurants that do this and they are filthy rich.

You have obviously never known anyone who was a waitress. Besides making less than $3 an hour before taxes, they often have to tip the busboy and/or foodrunner out of the money they make. 10% should be the bare minimum, IMHO.

Simply saying "find another job" is a cop-out for cheap people who don't want to tip. Often times career waitresses know nothing else and would not be able to find another job anyway.
It is not my problem that they make less than $3 an hour (which by law they must make minimum wage if their tips are short). Nor is it my problem if they share their tips with busboys or food runners. I'm not in the business of making welfare payments. Because you choose to give people does not make me cheap for refusing to give those same people money.

TIPS is an ancronym that stands for To Insure Prompt Service. TIPS are not a legal obligation, if the eating establishment insists that their waitresses be paid then they should raise their wages. I will TIP what I feel is legitimate and not a penny more. The problems of waitresses have no bearing on my life. If they can't make a living doing what they are doing then that is THEIR problem, not mine.

My point is:
Leaving a penny tip or even a $5 tip on a $100 bill is not going to solve any problems, and will probably just make the waitress less willing to help the next person (and that could be you next time!). If you truly feel a waitress deserves less than 10%, then you really should talk to the management about it. She might not know what she did wrong, or that you had a problem. Who knows, you might just get a free meal out of the deal!

BTW:
TIPS does NOT stand for To Insure Prompt Service. That would be "Ensure" anyways. Linky.

Somebody was/is in the restaurant business. (Your user name gives you away :) ) Hasn't anyone seen Reservior Dogs? Mr Pink (Steve Buschemi) goes into a beautiful rant on tipping.

Don't give me that. She don't make enough money, she can quit. I don't tip because society says I have to. Alright, I mean I'll tip if somebody really deserves a tip, if they really put forth the effort, I'll give 'em something extra, but I mean this tipping automatically is for the birds. I mean as far as I'm concerned they're just doing their job.

So's working at McDonald's, but you don't feel the need to tip them, do you? Why not? They're servin ya food. But no, society says don't tip these guys over here, but tip these guys over here.

And this non-college BS you're giving me, I got two words for that: "Learn to f***in type." Cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent, you're in for a big f***in' surprise.

Was in the restaurant business, still am part time, but my restaurant is more of a fast food, carry out place... no waiters, no waitresses.

I happen to eat out fairly often. The "dr pizza" nickname is due to a lot of knowledge of pizza, one of my favorite foods.

Culture changes. Because I disagree with you about the proper use of tips does not mean my views are any less valid than yours and juvenile statements about "leaving the world" because I tend to favor european views about tips simply points out your character. In addition I would appreciate it if you could provide to me your name and the address of the eating establishment you own because a I have a feeling your local health department would like to see a copy of your views on the matter of addition of bodily fluids to customers dinners.

I leave a poor tip if i get extremely poor service, if i get decent service i leave a 15%ish tip, if i get great service, and i am actually impressed by the waiter/waitresses attitude ill tip up to 30% (obviously not 30% on a $150 meal , but on a $70 bill at outback yeah)

If i get incredibly poor servies ill leave a small tip and ask for a comment card, or talk to the manager. But i always leave some kind of tip, even if small.

I know a waitress at an outback steakhouse that makes $500-$900 a week in tips. Everytime she has waited on me and others around me she has ALWAYS done a great job. Thats what the tipping system is for. You do a good job, you get paid.

If the waitress gets stiffed she will remember.

When I get service like that I leave a quarter....and I wouldn't have given her shiite if I went back to get my cell phone and believe me the manager would have heard from me also not only about her service but her demanding a tip.

I was with my Tae Kwon Do club at Sulan, a "Eurasian bistro" in Columbus, OH to celebrate after tournament day. The restaurant was a nice, expensive one and the waiter was ok...although he gave me some attitude because I wanted a new drink since mine had something in it.

When we got our bills, we realized they actually included the tip in the bill. Not just 15%, but twenty something. One of the upper belts stared down the manager and made him refund the extra tips.
