First a shit performance by Machida then a shit decision. Double shit.

I'm a Machida fan; not so much a Shogun fan. And Shogun goes in there fights a perfect fight against Machida using a strategy completely counter to his normal style, and he gets screwed by the judges. Shogun should be allowed to stomp the judges in the head, Pride style.

I wanted Machita to win, but he lost. NO DOUBT.

I didn't like Shogun at all. Still don't, but he won.

It shouldn't have been unanimous, but I'm not all that surprised. Rua's kicks landed but he took a lot of punches at the same time.

I am a Machida fan, but he lost that fight. I just checked MMA junkie and SI.com, both had Shogun winning as well.

I can only think that this is a case of "home field advantage" that is, you have to beat a champion convincingly to get the belt, not eek out a close decision.

if it were close I would understand it... I'm not a fan of either fighter, thats just a shit decision.

machida landed some solid hits that the commentators seemed to ignore as rua landed his kicks...

anyhow i think machida should have lost as well

Shogun had a hell of a fight, he did not deserve to lose tonight. Not Machida's best. I would say it was close but advantage to Shogun IMO

Oh well, at least I get to see the guys who bet on Shogun get their hopes up then dashed to the floor like a precious vase. The crying will be epic.

I'll have to rewatch the fight though. Maybe Machida really did win and the commentary skewed my perception.

At least we got to see how Machida deals with adversity when he's in deep water: not very fucking well. He was definitely starting to break in the 5th.

it did seem unfair that the commentators only commented on shogun's kicks and blows while almost completely ignoring machida's

No, it had to be the unwritten rule I've seen so many times in boxing, that you have to beat the champ convincingly. You just don't get to be the champ on close decisions, because the champ always gets the nod when it is.

hm.. yeah the commentary was one sided.

but they've been announcing for years. it's instinct to them to announce what they see as the better fighter.

and i agree shogun was slightly ahead.
but apparently, there's the old saying to be champ, you have to BEAT the champ. not just have an slight edge.

yup, basically, the champ comes into the fight +3 points on his scorecard

round 2 coulda gone either way
round 3 was machida

Particularly given the money wagered on this one, and the odds Rua fans were getting, Bookies would have been shatting themselves on the payout.

I think the fact that most people expected Machida to dominate also played into the reaction when the fight ended up the way it did.
