Stores will overcharge a lot for CR123As. www.surefire.com and www.batterystation.com sell them for about $1.25 each compared to $5-$8 each in a store.

Yup. Thats the way to go, I just bought the bulk pack - 72 - from Surefire. I guess I'm ready for winter!

Btw, incandescent light is better for your color vision. Our eyes are engineers to work with sunlight and firelight, neither of which is the color of a white LED. Of course you have to weigh that with the burning out.

I have a few 4's and a 6 D cell maglites, thats as high tech as I go. when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere and need a hammer, you don't want to use a $500 flashlight as a replacement.

1) People with flashlight fetishes;
2) Not one but TWO forums for people with flashlight fetishes; or,
3) Flashlight reviews by someone who made a custom measuring device.

Personally, I like dive lights. My heavy 8D cell one can blind at 50 yards! :) You sacrifice a little portability, but it doesn't matter when you're weightless.

Well you say that because you've never handled a high performance light. The Surefire G2 or 6P will EMBARASS that 8D cell that youre talking about, and theyre only about 5" long. One step up to the new 9P - a measly $75 shipped from some places, and you'll have yourself a real flamethrower. And thats' not counting the optional high output lamps you can get for any of the lights I mentioned.

As we say to new visitors in those forums, "Get one and you'll understand."

But can you take the Surefire G2 to a depth of 100'+?

~AJ

if i'm at that depth i'm probably dead. so no need for me! :p

I would seriously take a look at the tactical line of lights that Inova offers. The T3 is a great light from what I hear - 85 lumen, 2hr regulated runtime....

Inova T3 (scroll down)

Unfortunately the 85lumen rating is probably a huge exageration. Probably only about 40lumens according to flashlightreviews.

Great -- thanks for the tip. I have an Inova LED light (don't remember model), and it was painful buying batteries for that thing. Of course, the original ones lasted 14 months or so! :D

You can find them for a pretty good price too if you search around a bit...

Inova T4 = poor man's L7. :)

Inova's are imported too and the F&F is quite good and superb considering the price range. Consider them the "honda" of fine personal carry lights.

Ummm, ok....

Anyway, This thread got me thinking that maybe a "Gadgets 'n Gear" forum would a good addition to AT....

How would I go about petitioning the mods to do that? Anyone else interested? With well over 100,000 members I'm sure it would get some hits.

Why? You have at least two other flashlight forums to visit, so theres no need to have an anandtech sponsored one.

Getting back to the subject, does Walmart or some other chain sell these LED flashlights? I'd like to try one out before I buy it without the hassle of ordering it online and finding out I don't like it.

It would be fine for a lumen junkie.

Beam quality on multiple emitters is rather nasty at least up close.

That light with three RB lux would be good for finding organic stains and scorpions. :)
