How bright is the maglight with 4D batteries?

Ugh, Maglites. They are just crap in my opinion. The bodies' are ok, and great for modding...

Modding a flashlight? 😕 I own a 4D Maglite and it works for me. I don't need anything fancy. Heck I have a $20 latern battery flashlight that has seen a lot of abuse and still keeps on trucking.

Some of the maglite mods are damn bright...

sharkeeper has $35,000 worth of lights I kid you not.
I think that sygyzy is laughing because he thinks the total is low.

I have a number of fairly high output pocket-sized lights (a SF A2 is my largest besides the add-on BBH): Surefires, SF mods, and limited-run customs. It's pretty silly that I have the following scattered around at my desk: McLuxIII-PD chrome, PR WX0T/E2e/McE2S, and LionHeart natural. My VIP BH/2AA/twisty was under some papers. I only use the LH or the VIP regularly because they're set up with rechargeables.

The interior lights on the subway went out briefly (5min?) earlier this week. I know I was prepared. 😉

Really. I believe that Mag85 mod is 600 lumens out the front end!

Yup. I work shift work in a glass factory. From time to time the power does go out in the middle of the night, and guess who all the cute girls crowd around? 😉

I have a 6D Maglite with the upgraded bulb (forget what it's called) and a Thor-X for when I really need some heat

Same here, especially once the talk of modding maglites came up.

But really, no different than modding a case so I'm not going to worry about it

what mod did you do to the right-angle military flashlight? i've got about four sitting around that i've been issued at various times in the past 5 years.

modded one of my mags, and really want to mod one of those too

I haven't modded that one yet, there is LED you can get from LED-replacement.com fot the 2D mag that fits in there, but I haven't decided what to do with it yet. It will get about 10hrs off that LED...

Uhh... we have a rechargable one that plugs in the wall. Other than, I don't really have sexual fantasies about handheld illumination.

I'm not sure what's more amusing in this thread:

1) People with flashlight fetishes;
2) Not one but TWO forums for people with flashlight fetishes; or,
3) Flashlight reviews by someone who made a custom measuring device.

Personally, I like dive lights. My heavy 8D cell one can blind at 50 yards! 🙂 You sacrifice a little portability, but it doesn't matter when you're weightless.

Well you say that because you've never handled a high performance light. The Surefire G2 or 6P will EMBARASS that 8D cell that youre talking about, and theyre only about 5" long. One step up to the new 9P - a measly $75 shipped from some places, and you'll have yourself a real flamethrower. And thats' not counting the optional high output lamps you can get for any of the lights I mentioned.

As we say to new visitors in those forums, "Get one and you'll understand."

The best part is if you use them during heavy fog, it looks like a light sabre. Put a color filter lense on it and you wil have a light sabre!
Only works in fogs

nice, if I wanted the cheapest/best (best price to quality ratio) flashlight what do you suggest?

Better not tell the wife that! 🙂

But can you take the Surefire G2 to a depth of 100'+?

And withstand salt water and coral.

I've used Surefires before, at my last unit, and they were impressive. They didn't, however, put my 8D dive light to shame in any way. For that matter, my 4 C cell one is pretty damn bright as well. I used that much more than the light cannon because it was far less intrusive to carry. Only took the big gun on low light dives or for small caves.

All Surefires are rated waterproof to at LEAST 33'. Buy putting an extra o-ring on the tailcap, it increases the waterproofness dramatically. I'm not sure how much though. I believe the $23 Streamlight ProPolymer 4AA Luxeon is waterproof down to 200'....

This is a bit off-topic, but if you buy a flashlight based on this thread that needs CR123A or need CR123A batteries in general, you should buy them online.

Stores will overcharge a lot for CR123As. www.surefire.com and www.batterystation.com sell them for about $1.25 each compared to $5-$8 each in a store.
