Ubuntu some websites not working

I've used Windows, and various browsers. It's for sure Ubuntu.
I can only go to certain websites. Pinging google.com every single line says destination port unreachable

DNS Servers: there are two of them
Search Domain: Is my resolved IP

Google.com doesn't work
woot.com doesn't work
hotmail.com doesn't work
msn.com doesn't work

Is there something those websites have in common that could help this issue?

Anyone have a clue? I'm beginning to dislike Ubuntu because of this, I've check there forums and everyone is puzzled.

This may help: before it crapped out on me, There was an update. BackEnd Port or BackPort End or something like that and looking through the internet settings, errors popped up saying something about the BackPort or whatever. While looking through the settings, there was a small expand arrow that I clicked and it said BackEndPort or something like that. Also, another thing is that when I look at "search domains" there is an extra period at the end instead of having only 3.

***Using Hardy 8.04***
It's not because it's a beta either, because it was working fine before the BackEnd Port, BackPortEnd update

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 x-desktop

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

search hsd1.tn.comcast.net.
nameserver 68.X.68.X I placed the X's in there (duh)
nameserver 68.X.74.X

hsd1.tn.comcast.net. <--- Extra period at the end (why is that?)

** Well, if no one knows then do you think I can keep my current desktop customizations and use the LiveCD to reinstall and attempt a fix?

***EDIT***
Facebook is telling me I have Java disabled..... I've triple checked and know for sure it's enabled. The same Java was working before the internet f*** up
This internet issue is also causing a Java problem... wth?

****EDIT****
When I use SUDO to install things it will say unable to resolve host: MXXXX-desktop
The host just used to be: MXXXX
Anyone!?

Thanks

***EDIT***

8.04 RC Fixed the problem

Do you mean you got an update from the backport repository? I wouldn't think there would be anything to backport as Hardy is still in beta. The thing is though, using a beta OS, things are going to be breaking from time to time. However, I am having no such problem with my system (using hardy) I updated it last night with no problems and everything is working just fine.

The thing is my Hardy was working fine until the update. I received an error at startup and the same error while trying to change network settings.

Is there a way to track down updates by date and remove them?

I'm not sure about Ubuntu but I have a /var/log/apt/term.log on my Debian system and aptitude logs to /var/log/aptitude by default IIRC. So if either of those exist and are current you should have your package names.

What does 'cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_ecn' say? I can't believe that anything would turn that on, but I guess it's possible.

After following the instructions in the Ubuntu section, courtesy of your link, I was able to use Google.com search. Everything else
is still the same. I cannot go to hotmail.com or woot.com

I use those as test sites because I know for sure they are not working in Ubuntu right now.

I'm still using hardy with no issues (ATT yahoo dsl).

What happens when you ping or traceroute those websites?

5 requests for PING=successful
Traceroute:

1 = my own IP successful
10-17 successful
There was a total of 31, so 1 and 10-17 worked and all the rest failed

Hopefully this helps.

Thanks

Have you tried a LIVECD to see what happens? That is a nice way as you don't have to wipe the system to see if a clean slate is any better

If ping works fine to those sites, then it must be something specific to Firefox. You might check the proxy configuration.

However, considering you are using a beta version of a browser running on a beta version of an OS, I would not be surprised if this is just some odd bug. You should look on launchpad and see if there is a bug report on it, and if not then submit one. Otherwise, I wouldn't bang your head to much over this and just wait for the final release of Hardy (personally, I would do a reformat after playing with beta, and reinstall Hardy final) or go back to Ubuntu Gutsy or Ubuntu Dapper (you can upgrade directly to Hardy final from either of those two versions) until final comes out.

Are you behind a NAT router? It could be possible ubuntu is doing something to screw that up. I had a problem back in the 6.06 days where gnome torrent did something that would crap out my netgear router. utorrent worked fine in windows however. Removing the router solved the problem. Upgrading the firmware fixed it.

Another problem I had with comcast was with my linksys cable modem. SSH tunnels made on linux (but not putty) would cause the modem to lock up and force a power cycle to fix the problem. Because I could not upgrade the firmware myself and comcast refused to upgrade it for me, I was forced to buy a new modem (moterolla if I remember right) and never had an issue again.

I highly doubt the problem is in ubuntu because it is almost final and I have yet to experience this problem on any of my computers using 8.04.

It's not my Motorola modem, because I was using it on Hardy and then all of a sudden crapped out. I do not have a router either.

but he upgraded from an earlier version, and you never know how upgrade packages are going to go with beta and pre-beta software.

True, I've always done fresh installs. Usually because I keep most of my important files on a NAS and fresh install is so easy with ubuntu.

I do upgrades, but only to/from gold versions, and never had a problem.

I have a few ubuntu 6.06 servers that I'm interested to see how they upgrade when hardy is released. If the LTS to LTS upgrade is rock solid, we may start using ubuntu for more things around campus.

My guess is the LTS-to-LTS upgrade will be the MOST solid of any of there upgrades, since that is what their enterprisey customers are going to be needing, and that is where their revenue comes from.
