Did you at least try it before throwing in the towel? People have already put together a package for you...look under the section "4.2. GPL RT73 driver".

It tells you to:
a) download/extract the latest cvs package
b) cd to the extracted Modules dir and type make (assuming you have your make tools installed)
c) make install
d) add specified code in three files and delete one
e) edit code to your needs
f) reboot (implied) and your net will work after every boot

That's it...

It should be automatic but it's not as hard as you make it out to be. Considering you probably won't have to do this ever again it's not bad at all. Make does the compiling for you. All you gotta do is configure it, stick it in, and reboot it.

If make doesn't work, install the needed packages:

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r` gcc-4.1

If you have any trouble just ask.

Guys I'm running 64bit Dapper Drake right now. Im going to upgrade to Kubuntu 6.10 today, I am seriously debating going for the i386 version instead of the 64bit version. Are there any tangible benefits of the 64bit version to this point?

I'd imagine only in server or serious workstation scenarios will there be any tangible benefit to running x64 versions of any OS. That's been my experience with both Windows and Linux thus far.

Alright, as cool as it is to run a 64bit Workstation, there is no WINE support, no FlashPlayer Support (Unless I install a 32bit Version of firefox which gets annoying), as a result of all thsi no games, and driver support is lacking. i386 Kubuntu 6.10 here I come 🙂

I agree, the allure of running a 64bit operating environment far outweighs the benefits, or rather consequences, of said 64bit operating environment for most applications.

Maybe in a few years we'll see more consumer/home user type stuff written to run natively in 64bit.

I'm running the 64-bit version. I think it may be slower. Though I figure sooner or later, something will take advantage of 64-bit and fly.

BTW, they've got WMV9 support native in 64-bit (via ffmpeg) now. You need to download the latest mplayer (from the svn repository). It should be in the Edgy repos soon.

Edit: WMA3 isn't supported yet.
