Ubuntu Dapper (6.06) - great linux distro

Personally i felt cheated when I installed ubuntu because the setup was so easy. Sometimes its fun to work for your os.
 
I like Linux. I really do. But I am a gamer, and games made for Windows work easiest on Windows.
If someone can show me an easy way to run my games on Linux, I'll change.
And yes, I already know about Wine.

I haven't had much success with Wine so far. I got it installed. I got Steam installed. But I can't get to my account, because the buttons don't have text, and the text boxes to enter in my username/password won't get focus for some reason.

But I have enjoyed fiddling with Ubuntu, and I've taken advantage of Ubuntu and Xubuntu to run most of my DC Farm on.

yeah, pretty much you'll end up playing a copy. Who's mature know that it is just a waste of time trying to make it work in Linux, when Windows is so omni-present. I don't think that anybody into gaming cannot aford to buy a single Windows copy. Game experience in linux can be only up to one in Windows; in many cases that "up to" is same as marketing claim that NetZero is "up to 5 times faster than other dial up service"

While the statement is usually true it's not applicable here because it's not a copy, it's the same software it just happens to be running via WINE instead of Windows.

Funny then how that they're usually the ones complaining the loudest about the cost of Windows, especially the upcoming Vista release.

Arguably, the "mature" crowd is not that concerned with playing video games period.

I installed 6.1 Edgy Eft last night on my main rig.. Gotta say UBUNTU is the best. I had a few problems installing Breezy on my main but Eft installed with NO problems.. Eery peice of HW worked perfect. My PC has a ASROCK Dual SATAII which was buggy for quite a few people under Breazzy.. Looks like they fied it. 🙂

I'm actually pleasantly surprised by how far linux distros have come - almost all of the hardware in my desktops/laptop is automatically recognized and configured out of the box - even better than Windows 😛

Last windows came out in 2001. Lst linux distro came out today. $0.01 question is which one has better support for hw between 2001 and today?
 
I think come eft time, I still may go Dapper when I do a total reboot. Eft seems to be a lot more rough and have plenty of wifi problems...of course they are trying to get back on track release-wise, but if wifi isn't working when it used to work =_=

1) Windows XP is sold with SP2 today. SP2 was releaed August 24th, 2004.

2) This is not even a comparison. Windows can't bundle drivers that third party manufactuers create without reaching agreements. Linux does not have this restriction since code is released under the GPL. Linux is superior in this sense. No arguement.

I downloaded Ubuntu and installed it on a computer at school to test it.
It seems like a good OS. I think I got Dapper, but It could be Edgy. I also downloaded Wine for Ubuntu.
I'm waiting for my parents to finish getting all their old documents of their old HP Pavilion Windows ME computer, which has fallen into a pile of spyware infested bitrot. Once they clean it out, I will wipe the HD clean and install Ubuntu on it.
However, should I get a copy of Xubuntu, or will standard work ok? I'm pretty sure its a 256 RAM machine. Might be 512, but I'm not sure.

If it has 512MB RAM standard is fine. 256MB it should still be okay. Any less and I'd recommend Xubuntu or any other distro using minimalist window managers like XFCE and fluxbox.

I'm trying it out now. It doesn't "just work" for me. 🙁

Edit: problem is that it won't pick up a Creative Sound Blaster 16 CTL0043 soundcard.
Going to try a 6.06 live CD instead of 6.10
