Isn't 'universe' the equivalent of 'contrib' which is not enable by default in Debian?

Edit: Oh wait, my bad, I'm betting you mean 'module-assistant' is available in the Debian 'main' repo.

No, packages in contrib are free software that depend on non-free softare to run so they can't be put into main. Universe is just the rest of the Debian packages that the Ubuntu people don't want to officially support.
