Why, WHY, did Canonical decide to make Unity even less customizable? Can't change themes/colors/fonts? Seriously??? Ubuntu Tweak (at least the alpha that is available for 11.10) has been neutered and gnome-tweak-tool is very limited. I was starting to like it in 11.04 too.

Ubuntu has always had a "fix it until it's broke" mentality.

I don't know what's gotten into UI dev teams lately. Somehow lack of choice has become the new cool. Two of my favorite things(Ubuntu and Gnome) in free software have been ruined by aggressive feature removal.

I blame Apple and smartphones :^D

The gnome-tweak-tool is actually for Gnome 3 and the Gnome shell. It has the same functionality and more of the old appearance settings IMO.

True but I've read (and used it successfully) in several blog posts and on forums that it can be used to change a handful of otherwise in-accessible settings. Hopefully, Ubuntu Tweak for 11.10 will give access to most of the features as it heads into beta and final.

I had my first experience with Unity yesterday and today after installing it via Ubuntu (version prior to 11.10) in a vm. It's pretty, but goddamned painful to use. When you have to look on the internet to figure out how to view files in a hidden directory via the GUI, something's very wrong.
