Im enjoying playing on a server that kinda has newish people it seems like and always 2fort4

I love being a spy with the knife that does instant disguise (forget the name offhand) and the dead ringer. I just run around, knife people, someone shoots me, feign death, turn a corner, decloak, then just walk back and stab em.

This one engineer in the flag room, i would sap his dispenser, then he would chase after me instead of fixing his dispenser. So i feigned death, then he went to his dispenser...BACKSTAB!

I feel bad picking on them, but its so much fun :) This server has TONS of engineers too for some odd reason.

Say what! When did they bring back feign death?

Since the Spy Update and the Dead Ringer stopwatch. If you're holding it out when you're hit by an attack, you instantly cloak and a fake ragdoll of yourself is thrown on the ground to make it appear like you died.

It's the Dead Ringer, a spy watch alternative.

You give up on demand cloaking, but you gain the ability to absorb damage at greatly reduced rates and when you do you drop a fake corpse and instantly cloak. The idea is to feign death, but fake deaths are extremely easily to tell apart from real ones, so it's used as more of an emergency escape tool after going for an attack, with the downside being that it's harder to sneak into position before said attack since you can't cloak on a whim.

Also, whenever you decloak there is a loud ringing noise. The volume level of this noise can be brought down a great deal if you use the specific Saharan Spy set (specific (weaker) knife, gun, and hat). So you get a much quieter decloak, but against competent opponents you're a lot weaker than a normal spy loadout so it would be tough to actually win.

Some people will tell you every spy in existence uses the Dead Ringer, but stats show it's at about ~30% usage, in line with the other watches. I personally think the most popular thing about it is how it offers you a way out of the very many random ways to instantly die in this game (especially as a spy).

Thanks. I played again tonight, and was had by the dead ringer. I would've been more confused if I didn't remember what you told me.

I also got quite a shock when I was ubered (as a heavy) and jumped in front of a sniper...who proceeded to stun me? Is there someplace that has a succinct listing of all the new crap and what it does?

You can't be stunned while ubered with one exception - I think. If you get hit by a taunt that freezes you (like the sniper's stab taunt), you freeze but don't take any damage.

IIRC, anyway.

Several people have the privilege of joining my server regardless of the player count. It makes more sense than forcing them to wait in line, I think.

What if there's a hacker playing in a full server?

EDIT: Notice that I didn't say that somebody gets kicked to allow for the entrant.

I have two problems with the reserved slots and kicking slots concept.
1) The server shows up as 30/32, but two slots are reserved, so it's really a 30/30. That's an annoyance, especially with the new auto-search. I can live with it though.
2) The server lets you in, you're playing, but all of a sudden you get kicked because a reserved lister joined and the server needs to clear another two reserved slots. That's the stuff that causes me to blacklist the server, because I don't want to play on a server that kicks you mid-game while doing nothing wrong.

I understand having access for your own clan members/friends, and certainly for server admins, but having the server kick its way through the list to clear reserved slots is obnoxious, and even better, those slots shouldn't show up in a search, although I don't know if TF2 supports hidden private slots.

Meh, I donate to TN and so I can get this privelege. When I go to play I generally only have a short amount of time to do it; I like to know I can get on a decent server and since their Badwater server is pretty much always full, it's nice knowing I will be able to get on no matter what.

KT

I have a few servers I like, and I'm fairly patient, so I put it on auto-join and play with my items list, the Steam browser, my phone, something on my desk, whatever. The average wait is probably about 90 seconds.

Those engineers need a good pyro. I like spies. :awe:

Never join almost full games. If you're looking for a 32 player server, join one that's at like 24-26; it'll fill up.

1) There are no reserved slots on my server, only the ability to join regardless of current player count.
2) The server just waits until somebody leaves and doesn't let anybody else join until it's below max again.

I recently got back into this after it went F2P. One thing that annoys me is the auto team balancing. Last night I was playing on a 2Fort server and I had capped the enemy intelligence twice. Next time I die I'm on the other team. I play well and the game rewards me by putting me on the losing team? Such crap.

Is that something that's server specific or do all of them do that? If it's server specific, is there any way to tell which ones auto balance before you join?

That nitpick aside, I forgot how much I like the game. I stopped playing right after they started introducing the new "toys" so I'm having fun unlocking stuff and trying different strategies. I just got the sandman last night, good times.

I believe it's random, although there may be people who have immunity to autobalance (usually donators and admins).

I haven't had much experience with that in TF2, but I know that that happens to me all the time in BFBC2. Even when I'm the top scorer on my team sometimes I'll get kicked because I'm the last player to join the server, nevermind the 10 recons on the team who haven't gotten a kill in 10 minutes.

it is a feature that is defaulted to on IIRC. it is to stop a game going to crap when it is 12 vs 6.

Generally, as mentioned, donators and admins are exempt from it on good servers, otherwise the game does post a message of "about to auto balance teams" or something, then it is the next person to die generally.

so, when you see that message, "hide" until someone else dies and the problem goes away :).

just have to pay attention to the messages that scroll up from time to time (and ignore the ragers typeing away).

for the general servers I can agree, change over times are not too bad. Hitting refresh as just the right rate (too fast causes the game to stop sending requestions) can help.

But for the server I donate to, it is popular. last night (mod appears broken currently for preference connections), it was closer to 12-15 minutes of hiting refresh. The players on it are more into the game so very few dropping off / leaving. that or the server was full of preferenced players :(
