Nothing really stands out on the album, IMO.

That says it pretty well. Every song on the album is instantly forgettable. It just sort of plods along until the end and when it's done you can't remember any of it. It's U2 channeling Barry Manilow. Even U2 junkies won't find much to like.

1) Recycle the same drum beat
2) Obtain a Boss DD-3 Digital Delay pedal and play 3 notes through it on 800ms mode
3) Sing elementary pretentious lyrics at random intervals

How to sound like U2:

1) Come out with the best album in the 80s
2) Coninue to dominate rock music in the 90s
3) Win 14 Grammy Awards

Not their best, as it has a tinge of Elevation, crossed with Beautiful Day, and a smattering of Bloody Sunday...

but a good tune to wake you up in the morning..

I didn't enjoy much of there 90s stuff. To me, that was the RHCP's decade. 🙂

I've been and continue to be a huge U2 fan.

However, and I am now embarassed to say, when I first heard ATYCLB, I was completely unimpressed. It had just come out and I listened to it at work - borrowed from a co-worker. I gave it back and told him that I doubted that I would buy it. It seemed lacking. Well, I heard one of the songs on the radio, then another and borrowed the CD again ... it started to grow on me. One of my favorite albums now, but initially, it didn't hit the spot.

I don't know that they're all forgettable. I think they might take awhile to grow. There are a handful of songs at the beginning that don't do much for me (although I like the intro to Miracle Drug; the song just doesn't live up to it), but the later songs are better.

It seems to me that a lot of the songs are soul/Motown inspired (and I don't mean Vertigo, although some have compared it to The Supremes, heh).

its upsetting to say that Vertigo is the best/memorable/standout song on the album. most of the album is so-so. its too mellow and there are no really good beats.
