Steel workers will end up with the same socialist paychecks the farmers are getting.
Riding on the backs of the blue states once again.

Just a few months ago US Steel said they are investing $1.2 billion into another plant in PA. Wonder if that has anything to do with this?

200 jobs lost here, 164000 jobs added in July, 224,000 added in June. Carry on, don't let me break up the circle jerk. The party-before-America types seem pretty happy.

Not buy'in this until you provide some hard evidence to support your claims. I'm too lazy or maybe too busy to look it up myself. ;)

This line is a bunch of bullshit, as is the use of "elite" as a pejorative. If the "Dems" are the elite and are not in the middle class that they are not the party of, then where are they?

You are right that 'elite' and middle class are not the same category so it makes no sense to say that they are the party of the elites and not the middle class. It is entirely possible to be both, and I suggest that the Democrats are.
The real problem here, as you started to say, is that 'elite' is being used as a pejorative. Elite in this context is being used to mean intelligent and educated, and they are trying to convince you that is a bad thing in our leaders. We should apparently want dumb uneducated leaders. Well, they got that with Trump.

I was under the impression that was SOP for his operations.

No, SOP for Trump is to just not pay them.

Nope, upgrades to their PA facility aren't expected to add jobs and won't even be ready until 2022. Falling steel prices due to lower demand are knocking more integrated mills off line as they become uneconomic to run.

So we're good with 200 people losing their jobs, if we added a bundle more in other places?

Are you saying the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few? That's pretty socialist of you.

You're trying really, really hard here. I'm not celebrating 200 people losing their job (as most of this thread is). I'm saying that this sounds like normal corporate change, but a lot of people here are trying to make this something I don't think it is. TDS and all.

But the point here is that Trump EXPLICITLY stated he's bringing STEEL jobs back to America.
With 200 STEEL jobs being lost, that does not seem to be what's happening.

And on the whole I believe that's true, more jobs in that sector have been added.

Yep, looking all fine on the corporate end. Nothing to see here.

It's not steel but there was a pretty big article on coal miners and their fight for federal protections on their pensions.

Story was basically:
Reporter: Trump claims he loves coal and coal miners.
Miner: He does
Reporter: But miners keep losing jobs.
Miner: .....
Reporter: And he ignored your invite to go sit with coal executives
Miner: .....
Reporter: And the tax cuts only helped the executives
Miner: ......
Reporter: And you guys are seeing record accidents because of deregulation and saftey in your mines
Miner: .....
Miner: Well I voted for him in 2016 because I thought he would change things.
Reporter: And it's only got worse, what are you going to do in 2020?
Miner: Well that's a complicated question.

Go ahead and keep pulling that red lever. It's definitely improved your life thus far.

I was really just making a joke. I hope US steel offers to move every family they've displaced via this to the new PA facility, since they're going to be opening a bajillion jobs with two new facilities (technically one's power generation, but whatever).

Both of these facilities are in city-scapes, so they're not exactly the 'rust belt' towns that people may be conjuring in their heads.

I didn't say anything about their stock price, you're moving the goal posts all over. Nice touch starting the scale at $10 though. I assume you think Tesla is dying too?

So would you say steel prices are high or low right now and why?

I don't know, I don't buy steel in volume. I know there are tariffs, but I imagine demand would remain largely unchanged. What product that you buy has gone up as a direct result of the tariffs, and by how much?

Producers initially benefited from higher prices but the higher prices eventually have lowered demand in a climate of falling business investment and other secondary effects from the trade war. The result is falling steel input prices, falling steel prices, and falling steel company stock. Now capacity is being sliced out of the less efficient operations like US Steel has to rebalance its production with demand so we'll have falling steel employment also.

Economic studies say increased costs to consumers from present tariffs are about $600 per year. The next round will take that over $1000 per year, effectively wiping out any benefit to regular people form the GOP tax cut. The next rounds of tariffs will be felt and seen more directly as consumer goods will more obviously go up in price.

I find it painfully ironic that you would ask this question on a forum for computer hardware enthusiasts. Many component vendors prices are currently up 25% due to tariffs and some of the smaller companies like Caselabs have been put out of business as a result of these tariffs.
