5-17-2006 St Louis Missouri Town Denies Unmarried Couple Permit To Move Into Their House

BLACK JACK, Mo. - The city council has rejected a measure allowing unmarried couples with multiple children to live together, and the mayor said those who fall into that category could soon face eviction.

Olivia Shelltrack and Fondrey Loving were denied an occupancy permit after moving into a home in this St. Louis suburb because they have three children and are not married.

Mayor Norman McCourt declined to be interviewed but said in a statement that those who do not meet the town's definition of family could soon face eviction.

I'm sure the Resident Republicans will be in here defending this with their usual hypocracy - freedom for businesses to do whatever they want, but gawd forbid private citizens lead their own private lives.

Nah. Sucks for the kids to live with a pair of ugly dykes, but if they are biological children, guess that's their problem.

Who said anything about gay couples? Hetero couples who aren't living according to gawd's great plan are affected by this.

Kind of odd for a mere "friendly" couple with kids from 1 or both people to live together.

But theres no reason for the law to prevent them to do what they want to do by their own means.

What's odd about it?

That's just my guess based on the situation. Doesn't really matter; they should be able to live however they choose to, and they don't merit my attention or concern.

6-27-2006 Aurora soda tax a possible budget sweetener

Aurora - The city took a first step Monday to possibly putting an additional tax on soda, becoming the first municipality in the state to discuss taxing sugary drinks.

Councilmen Steve Hogan and Larry Beer wondered about the effects of the tax. Hogan said the tax doesn't improve city residents' health if the money goes into the city's general fund.Beer approved further discussions but said he doubted he would support the tax when it goes to the full council.

"I do eat cheeseburgers and would be concerned with a cheese tax coming next," he said.

Chicago has had a 3 percent tax in place since 1993 on sodas, carbonated water and drinks containing less than half fruit juice. Last year, it generated $7.9 million.

A committee of the American Medical Association recently proposed a federal tax on sugar-sweetened drinks.

What they don't mention is that fruit juices aren't that great for you either...they have high amounts of sugar as well. But again...the government is stepping in where they have no business

7-10-2006 Massachusetts court backs gay marriage on ballot

BOSTON - The same court that made Massachusetts the first state to legalize gay marriage ruled Monday that a proposed constitutional amendment to ban future same-sex marriages can be placed on the ballot, if approved by the Legislature.

In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Judicial Court said the constitution does not bar citizen initiatives from making prospective changes to the constitution, even if that effectively overrules the effect of a prior court decision, because that change would not be a reversal.
=========================================
It's not "citizen initiatives".

It's rule by the Religious and that is not what America was founded for.

Between being Taxed to death and American Taliban rule, these two items will start the next Revolution in the U.S. or sadly many will simply leave the Country.

King George prevails.

Time to start eating chicken sandwiches and drinking sparkling water!!! 😉

Or maybe ask our local governments to start spending within their limits? Gee, who'da thunk of that???

I myself am a staunch advocate of the V For Vendetta approach to fixing the problem of an overly fascist government.

This is beyond words.

7-28-2006Republicans tie minimum wage to tax cut

WASHINGTON - Republican leaders are willing to allow the first minimum wage increase in a decade but only if it's coupled with a cut in future inheritance taxes on multimillion-dollar estates, congressional aides said Friday.

A package GOP leaders planned to bring to a vote Friday or Saturday in the House also would renew several popular tax breaks, including a research and development credit for businesses, and deductions for college tuition and state sales taxes, said a spokesman for House Majority Leader John Boehner.

The maneuver is aimed at defusing the wage hike as a campaign issue for Democrats while using its popularity to spur enactment of the Republican Party's long-sought goal of permanently cutting taxes on millionaires' estates.

Democrats immediately expressed outrage, saying low-income workers deserved a straight vote on increasing the minimum wage uncoupled to other measures.

"It's political blackmail to say the only way that minimum wage workers can get a raise is to give a tax giveaway to the wealthiest Americans," said Sen. Edward Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), D-Mass. "Members of Congress raised their own pay ? no strings attached. Surely, common decency suggests that minimum wage workers deserve the same respect."

Inflation has eroded the minimum wage's buying power to the lowest level in about 50 years. Yet lawmakers have won cost-of-living wage increases totaling about $35,000 for themselves over that time.

Those with the most influence get the laws they want. And those are the ones with the most money. Is it any wonder that the game is tilted in their favor?

What a crock of fvcking $hite!

I love Dave's lies in his thread titles...Remind me again what percentage of taxes the top 20% pay again?

So let me get this straight.

A bill that affects 1.6% of working people is having an attachment that affects about .005% of taxpayers?

And of course Dave jumps on it because the republicans have put together two "wedge" issues that affects about 2 million people in this country, most of them students.

Can we say pointless?

Yeah, the minimum wage is simple Democrats trying to dupe the American public hook, line and sinker.

Either way though, it should get its own up or down vote. Mixing stuff like this is stupid.

It's not blackmail, it's compromise.

And Mr. Kennedy, did you vote against raising your pay? Didn't think so. And if minimum wage workers deserve a raise, then their companies will give it to them. If not, then they need to find another job.

Oh, btw, guess who generally pays minimum wage? small mom & pop shops, the same ones most democrats want to protect from big bad Walmart and others who pay more than minimum wage.

Yeah, it's a compromise to allow billions in taxes flow away while we create entitled nobles and uber-rich people benefits well beyond what most Americans will get. Furthermore, it's a compromise to not allow the less fortunate a reasonable shot at supporting themselves.

Proof that Kennedy voted for the last pay increase? Proof on your final comment?

For once I actually agree with Zen that minimum wage should be voted on by itself up or down.

In 2005, most of the senate voted against their increase. Funny how 2/3 of the no votes were Democrat.

In 2003, Ted Kennedy was all for his pay increase, and his buddy Kerry was a usual no-show. He was too busy losing an election.

7-29-2006 House approves minimum wage increase - GOP couples boost with estate tax cut

WASHINGTON - Republicans muscled the first minimum wage increase in a decade through the House early Saturday after pairing it with a cut in inheritance taxes on multimillion-dollar estates.

GOP leaders saw combining the wage and tax issues as their best chance for getting permanent cuts to the estate tax, a top GOP priority fueled by intense lobbying by super-wealthy families such as the Waltons, heirs to the Wal-Mart fortune.

It was during the campaign year of 1996 that Congress last voted to increase the minimum wage. A person working 40 hours per week at minimum wage makes $10,700, which is below the poverty line for workers with families.

Inflation has eroded the minimum wage?s buying power to the lowest level in about 50 years.

GOP leaders ? actually oppose the minimum wage increase.
