1st Mexican truck to enter US interior

Washington on Friday approved the first Mexican trucking company, Transportes Olympic, nearly two decades after the hotly contested provision of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement set off lawsuits and a costly trade dispute between the neighboring countries.

"We're literally taking good jobs here in America and passing them over the line to Mexico"

Todd Spencer, the executive vice president of the Independent Drivers Association, which represents small independent trucking businesses, said 100,000 trucking jobs will be lost.

Proponents say it will spur economic growth as companies save millions by sending the goods door-to-door.

Mucho grasseyass UPS driver for my delivery.... 😀
My iPhone was made in China. Delivered by Mexico. To my house owned by Wall Street greed. 🙁

I don't usually agree with dmcowen on anything, but he's 100% right on this one.

Why? So long the US truckers get to drive to mexico, I don't see the problem. IIRC before this, they would have to unload the cargo and reload it on another truck at the border.

Do you honestly think that's going to happen?

There won't be us truckers. 100k lost they say. I'm sure the $4 a hour guys will be mucho competent and not fuck up on our roadways. Us truckers should realize that wealthy Americans just won't pay them $18 a hour when it can be done for $4. They should just learn to compete and work harder.

If i were a US trucker the last thing i'd want to do is deliver down in Mexico.

just so some of you guys know, Mexican truck drivers are significantly more terrible on average than ours. Oh lord this is going to be interesting, I need to read up on the full list of compliance needed.

ps JSt0rm mobile device? I usually end up with a n not a m in between my words. Lols

I assumed as much. Licensing standards in Mexico are probably pretty damn bad.

Yep, that's about right up there on my list along with hiking at the border of North Korea and going on vacation in Mogadishu.

So Obama caves in to extortion by the Mexican government, and this is a republican problem? Pretty sure its opposed on a fairly bipartisan basis. Your dear leader is the one that started it back up... Probably after the president of Mexico said he would like us more if we let it happen.

But hey, $4 an hour explains why you are upset... They'll still be making more than you.

Ah - there's that good old job creators point.

Seems to me that the savings are just horded by the rich - not much job creation in the US. But, there seems to be plenty of growth outside the US.

Seems about the time someone rolls out the race card. Has anyone forwarded this thread to Charlie Gonzalez (head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus)?

I find this disgraceful, they're sacrificing the safety of the US drivers on the road and giving up thousands of jobs at the same time. Placing the blame on the GOP alone is disingenuous though. At least from what I've read, both parties have a hand in this, and Obama could have stopped it as well... but he made a deal with Mexico to allow this to go forward. As usual the US interests are sold down the river by both sides.

You really think U.S trucks will drive into the interior of Mexico? It will cost them twice as much since they will need an armed escort.

FWIW:

The company was approved under the pilot program in 2009 before President Barack Obama's administration cancelled it. Mexico retaliated by placing tariffs on 99 agricultural products worth more than $2 billion annually.
Looks like the Obama admin tried to stop it. I guess $2B is better than 100k jobs?

So the manufacturing in this country is gone. Ok fine, we've given up, it's not coming back. We'll stick to service jobs. Then they start shifting service jobs that don't need to be physically located in the US, to overseas locations. Call centers, tech support, etc. Ok those are shitty jobs anyway, fine Wall Street, whatever. Then they start shifting more skilled work overseas, engineering and design. Ok this is getting ridiculous... Oh wait, what's this? Work that by its very nature MUST be performed INSIDE the US, by (relatively) unskilled labor that doesn't require a degree? Oh, well let's let that be done by MEXICAN DRIVERS from MEXICAN COMPANIES.

What the fuck is wrong with this country? What happened to US companies wanting US protectionism? What happened to US companies wanting to be a part of creating a strong country rather than just padding the bottom line? All of these great "US" companies that lobby for free trade are talking out of both sides of their mouth. They wave American flags and support the troops and remember 9/11 and profess love for the country while simultaneously tearing it apart.

Why'd Obama back down after Mexico slapped a tariff on some US goods? Does Mexico really want a trade war? Who do they think would lose in that one? According to the US Census Bureau, Mexico exports $66B more into the US than it imports in US goods. Any trade war is going to harm them worse than it harms the US.

404: $4/hr not found.

By the way, the second paragraph in your quoted article reads:
U.S. Reps. Duncan Hunter and Bob Filner joined Teamsters President James Hoffa at the border Wednesday to take a bipartisan stand against the pilot project that will allow approved Mexican trucks to come deep into the United States.

Republican plan? You really did eat paint chips as a child, didn't you?

They should have just banned Western Union money transfers from the US to Mexico, that would have made the Mexican government back down in a hurry.

bad idea.

what happens if a truck hits my car? how do i sue the mexican company that did it?

not to mention i would rather pay US truckers then mexican to deliver goods in teh US.

The body count is going to be enormous, and you can't get blood from a turnip so there won't be any recourse either. We already circumvent our of our worker and product safety laws with "free trade" now we can circumvent all our road safety requirements too. The only thing impressive about our government these days is how they manage to one up themselves repeatedly in incompetence and corruption.

This isn't really just a republican problem though. Neither party is interested in doing anything about this.
