Inspired by the other food thread.

When thinking about my answer I realized that I have far more foods that I hated when I was a kid, but now I enjoy.

Guacamole (avocados in general)
pho
tea (chrysanthemum, black and spiced)
coffee
asparagus
eggplant
chicken feet
curry foods (indian, thai, japanese)

and a bunch more I can't think of. Anyone else?

Sour Cream. Never liked it as a child, love it now. Other things would be veggies, wine, beer. Not that I drank wine or beer as a child, but the smell alone made me want to yak.

I'm with you on the guacamole and asparagus. They are fantastically delicious, but I never liked them as a kid. Same is also true of Brussels Sprouts and Cabbage.

But, some things, such as curry and coffee, I loved from the first time I tried them. That said, neither of my parents drank coffee, so I didn't really try it until I was a teen. Same is also true of curry.

I never like mayo as a kid. After working in a pizza restaurant (where they also had subs), I started putting a light amount on the rolls. Constant note to self: when you tell Subway "light mayo", you have to say "light amount of mayo" else they put about 500 calories worth of light mayo (that tastes like shit) on your sub. I didn't even know there was a mayo light product. (and disagree that it's mayo.)

The other food I was pleasantly surprised with was salmon. My grandparents made salmon loaf all the time. If I smelled it, I vomited. Just the smell makes me nauseous. I assumed it was the salmon. Nope, I LOVE salmon.

That made me LOL. I used to hate brussel sprouts until I learned how to prepare them in such a way that they actually taste good.

I used to hate mushrooms as a kid, but it was a mental block thing. To me (as a little kid, mind you) mushrooms were synonymous with "toadstools" -- which, naturally, meant that toads made a habit of sitting on them all the time, getting their butt-slime all over them. No way I was gonna eat that.

I still dont really LIKE broccoli that much, but I can tolerate it, and I eat a lot of it just because I know it's good for me.

Onions
Tomatoes
Sour cream

And I've loved beer since the first time I had it at 16, at the Hofbräuhaus in München. :cool:

fish. never had a problem with shellfish. oyster and shrimp po' boys were a favorite. but fish... between the subtle flavor and the constant bones (i still get bones all the time) i didn't like it.

also did not like brussels sprouts, though that was the prep (boiled brussels sprouts are still nasty, that chemical was used to kill people in WWI), asparagus, onions on practically anything (still gross on pizza), and everything from mcdonald's.

all seafood or anything ethnic food not chinese/vietnamese (not including"gross" stuff) outside of the norm of a kid living in east coast suburbia growing up in the 1990s.

i've since made a 180 degree turn and pretty much eat everything now, and actively seek out new cuisine. fuck fast food. oh and mayo is still really gross in large amounts!

I hated sushi.

I was a teenager and tried it at the chinese buffet next to the movie theater.

Stayed away for a few years while friends raved, then tried it at an actual sushi restaurant.

Lesson learned. I was a stupid teenager.

Coffee. Hated it as a kid. Started drinking it with LOTS of sweet n low and creamer when I was 21 to help cope with working full time and going to school full time, but I still hated how it tasted.

Now I drink it black (or with a little creamer) and about twice as strong as most people like it.

Salmon is the fish of the gods.

There aren't any foods I can think of like that. There was a lot of foods I wouldn't eat as a kid that I will now, but that's because my parents had a habit of giving me something I hate, but calling it something else when I was 4-6 hoping I'd eat it anyway and it took me a while to sort it all out when I got older (wouldn't eat chicken cutlet for a long time because my parents would give me cheap breaded fish and call it that).

Onions are the big one - I hated them growing up (they were almost always part of our dinner), but now I've learned to appreciate the flavors various onions/preparations can offer.

A few additions:
* Sushi
* Unsweetened Tea
* Coffee (without tons of sugar and/or chocolate flavoring)
* Beer

I'm probably one of the few people who doesn't like sweetened tea at all. It's horrible.

bleu cheese

Though, in truth, I have no idea what preparation(s) of bleu cheese I actually like or prefer. It's always just referred to as "bleu cheese" in restaurants, so it could be any type made in that specific way.

I was always turned off by the somewhat liquid, and chunky, cup of cheese served as a dipping product in restaurants.
Now, I just about require it with any order of wings or chicken chunks. :)

Also, it is amazing (that, or feta) to mix in to hamburger meat before forming patties to throw on the grill. OMG bleu cheese burgers are so damn good.

I'm probably one of the few people who doesn't like sweetened tea at all. It's horrible.

I must have southern blood in me.
I love me some real sweet tea. :)
