I have a Tyan ThunderK7 with Dual XP 1800+ that refuses to reboot. Once the computer is up, it is very stable, but if I have to reboot then it shuts down and doesn't even post. If I enter the bios, which I have updated and still no fix, and reboot from bios the same problem occurs. I have the NMB power supply and wonder if anyone has a similar setup, or has similar problems. I have removed all PCI cards, CD-Roms, AGP card, etc and the problem persists.

If you are very well educated in PC problem solving or have a similar setup please respond. Is this problem more related to the powersupply or the motherboard. I would rather not replace the motherboard if needed due to very high costs.

If you want to read it all, HERE is a 34 Page thread dedicated to the Thunder and its many quirks dating back to day one. One thing about the NMB is that you dont want to use it in an unloaded condition, so removing all that stuff can actually work against you. Secondly you need to post your OS, and thirdly, most people have stated that the latest Tyan bios flashes do not support XP processors. I dont know if any of this is your problem but read that looooong thread and see if you can find something that will help if not.

Thanks, Ill remember that note. Im getting one in by the end of the week. I am running a Tiger right now and getting the Thunder for the onboard features, since I have a lot of SCSI. :) Keep us updated. Im running MP processors so hopefully no problems The NMB was included in the deal, so thats what I will start with anyway. From reading the tread it seems most of the problems with the NMB were people not properly applying load to it, and it wont work unloaded.(makes me a little curious of the fan you added did more for the load or cooling the chipset?) Best of luck to you.

Edit.. BTW Im running WINXP PRO

The fan was on moved around in the case.. so I didn't add any additional power to the box. I can only hope that a geforce 3, wd 100 gb ata hd, cd burner, 2 15000 rpm hard drives, 4 sticks memory 4 80mm case fans is enough to load the powersupply.. not to mention the soundblaster audigy, which has a molex connector for its firewire plug is enough to load it... oh,.. i also have a second 10 MB scsi card.. i think it really is due to cooling the chipset.. but I'll keep you posted if the problem returns...

maybe anand and crew could maybe run a test to help us out here...

THis is the reason I mentioned the load thing..From that long thread I linked you to...

<< The K7 runs a 12v line through CPU AND through I/O. Its the I/O side that is
the problem. Doesn't matter if you have CPUs, CPU fans, and memory banks
filled up. When NMB turns on there is a minimum .5-1.0amps load it looks for
before finishing 'ON' cycle. If its not there, the PSU will simply shut
itself down. Once you install a chassis fan ( usually 1.0amp or 1.25amp )
the system will POST everytime. Strange thing is, with CDrom, 2 HDDs (SCSI),
FDD, IDE ZIP, IDE DVD, and WITHOUT chassis fan, the system will not POST. I
would think the load of all these periphs would be at least above .5amps.
Remove everything and just plug in chassis fan and system POSTs. Here is
link for NMB. Support section somewhat explains the minimum load thingy.
After troubleshooting, my bad PSUs turned out be be good....

This is interesting... I plug 2 80mm case fans into my motherboard, and the other two I have wired on an on/off switch... does the tyan check the motherboard fans for the load.. or is it looking to the molex fans? Either way, all I did to "solve" this problem was relocate a fan inside my box. Electrically it looks the same.
