TWO YEARS without NFL football????

I've found myself just looking at the score sheet in the Union Trib more than actually watching the games as I've grown older. Football has lost a lot of it's luster for me. 2 years isn't that big a deal in the grand scheme of things. There are more interesting things to do on Sundays, pick some flowers, sing kumbaya, plant some trees...

College teams are licking their chops. Their revenue will skyrocket.

yeah, I'll definitely be getting more college ball in. I used to watch that almost exclusively, and only over the last 6 or so years have a slowly migrated in almost the opposite direction to the NFL.

I'll admit I'm borderline retarded in this whole situation. So we have the players union on one side and the owners on the other...but does the NFL as the overseer of the league have any clout and pull? They almost have the most to lose in the situation out of anyone don't they? Lost revenue during the lockout and longterm attendance/viewership down the road is a real risk like what happened in baseball is a concern I'm sure.

So that being said...does the league have any trump cards they can throw down and get this thing wrapped up?

The league can and probably will institute a lockout. They have some revenue coming in from league contracts and ticket sales to some degree even if no games are played. They are collectively much more financially secure than the players. Many of them are filthy rich outside of anything the NFL does (some do have big stadium debts though). Oversimplifying, but if it's a game of who can hold their breath the longest - the owners win, easily.

With the AFL-CIO entering the picture, I can see them leading the players astray and prolonging this thing more than it needs to be.

Again, I'm really clueless on the structure of the NFL, but does the "League" = the owners...or does the NFL as a business entity have any type of authority over the owners/teams.

what you're asking is if the commissioner's office is looking out for the business as a whole vs being with one side or the other, and the answer is that the commissioner is fully in the ownership's camp.

Errr....Rodger that.

:hmm:

Wait, so is the Lingerie Football League in any ways affiliated with the NFL? Because, I might just have an idea. :awe:

If it means more normal shows coming back during that time I am happy for it as I don't watch the games.

Nope. football is on during the weekends.

If people stopped watching the slew of reality tv garbage we'll return to normal.

American Idol, the bachelor etc.

the fact that there is an NFL player's 'union' is sickening to me in the first place, and then the fact that it takes care of it's former players for shit - that 'union' money could be much better spent attending to the health-care for former players.

Rookie contracts are a joke - if NFL players can't agree to that fact, what's the point of any of these negotiations? Shame on the owners for letting that go so long - JaMarcus Russell took home 30+ million already - Verhnon Golsten, 22+M - neither could play at all

the 18 game schedule? Only the owners want it - I think it's an awful idea.

think of the cries of the fantasy football world if 2 NFL seasons are cancelled....

they'll agree to a rookie salary cap, but they're using it as a bargaining chip.

You might want to read up on the basic differences of the sides. Both sides want a Rookie Wage Scale, the vets are pissed about rookies getting paid before they play a snap and the owners dont like gambling with 60 million dollar contracts. The main difference in the two sides is the fact that the players want to keep their current 60% of the revenues, the owners want an additional billion allotted to them before the revenues are split. That is the single biggest roadblock to the deal getting done, and that is the launching point both sides are trying to establish.

After the lockout we should have a boycott to bring down prices for the consumer. After two years they won't be able to say no to any demands.

While there are other things to watch I'd really miss the game if they cancel.

But I honestly can't believe the television stations allowed the contract language in that said they would pay even if there was no play 😵

yea I was scratching my head on that one too. But this bit makes a bit more sense

The networks will be contractually required to pay that money to the league even if the games are not played, although the league will have to pay that money back to the networks, with interest, once games resume.

Awesome-bring it on!

Then maybe, just maybe, the taxpayers will begin to realize what a financial ride they have been taken on with all the free stadiums and other billions of dollars we have given gratis to the football team owners.

Heck maybe Congress will grow some stones and permit some honest American free competition in the professional football field.

I do feel sorry for the many players who will throw away a big chunk of the earnings career for the benefit of future players.
