same here, but we have 3 wireless comps, only kicks off 2 out of the three

I've never had an HDMI signal drop or had my controller disconnect. Sounds like your PS3 is messed up.

Mine will drop connection to the Sixxas occasionally. I've had it happen in Motorstorm and GTA4, it's really annoying in GTA4, because Niko just starts running his own way for 2-3 seconds and I'm like "wtf?".

It's usually not too bad, but I do notice the drop at least once every couple of hours when I'm playing. I've just learned to deal with it tho, since it seems to be something fanboys like to argue about and Sony likes to ignore. It's real tho, and of the 4 other people locally I know that owns PS3 systems, it happens to all of them.

My sixaxis controller sometimes loses the connection for about 2-3 seconds. It happens very rarely (once every 2 weeks or so). Sometimes its frustrating, like having a good game of super stardust HD going, and if it loses the connection, its pretty much a guarantee that i'm a goner.

I never had either of the OP's problems with my 40GB but..

My ps3 knocks my laptop off the wireless from time to time.. not EVERY time it boots, but enough for it to be annoying.. You ever figure out anything to do to resolve this?

If you guys both have the Linksys wrt54g, you're screwed unless you want to customize all the settings or you can load up custom firmware (not all support it).

I never had any controller dropout issues.

But my main annoyances with the PS3 are:

1. HDD Installs and install times. Nothing sucks more than getting a new game, and then wait forever to install it. Case in point: GT5P. Put disk in and have to install update. Update downloads horribly slow and an hour later it finally finishes. Well then it decides to install which takes another 15 minutes. I'm normally patient, but it's annoying as hell.

2. Slow download times. Some don't experience this, but many people do. I pegged my download speed at ~200-250 KB/s even though my connection is capable of ~1.2MB/s. Maybe there's something wrong in a setting... who knows. All I know is that my 360 probably downloads near that speed.

3. Controller ergonomics. I bought the game GRID yesterday, and I had a choice between the 360 and PS3 version. I picked the PS3 version simply because I heard people have had freezing issues with the 360 version. Well, big mistake. I have large to medium sized hands and the controller is absolutely horrible for racing games. I didn't notice this in GT5P, because it has a different layout, but this controller is horrible. I kinda wish Sony would've kept the boomerang controller, as that looks infinitely more ergonomic than their current controller, which is essentially pushing 14 years of age.

The 360 controller is simply the best I've ever felt. And it's the little things to be honest. The left analog is offset with the other analog. A key design choice, since games primarily use the analog now. Sony's controller is based off of years old technology where the D-Pad was originally the primary pad, yet sony never made a transition. The triggers slope downward on the PS3 controller. Had they sloped upward, then that would solve several ergonomic issues with racing games.

Another small thing about the PS3 controller that many don't think about, is that the right analog completely blocks the line of sight with the start button. You could have your finger resting on the X button, but you cannot smoothly make the transition to the start button. On the 360 controller, it's slightly blocked, but it's an easier transition. There's several more minor things, but those are the only ones worth mentioning.

Despite all of this, I love the PS3. I just wish its controller didn't suck so much. It'd be nice if some third party developer *cough*Logitech*cough* would create a controller with similar ergonomics as a 360 controller.

This is the one thing I've always hated about the PS2 and will hate about the PS3 when I finally buy one - Sony uses a vastly inferior controller design than Microsoft does. Hate on the xboxes all you want, but that gamepad design is Ergonomic Nirvana. The only problem is if Sony changed it to be more like the 360, people would bash them for being a " MS ripoff" or something.

I wish my controller would disconnect sometimes :p. Like when my friend left my PS3 on when I brought it over to his place and drained my battery ~_~.

Yea, that's another thing...why couldn't sony have made so that the controller auto disconnects after 10 minutes of inactivity?

Likewise with nintendo's past controllers (N64 & GC)... They were ugly as hell, but they sure were comfortable to use

Seconded, the GC controller is without a doubt my favorite. I still don't understand why Sony didn't at least switch the d-pad and the left analog stick, that would have helped immensely. I suppose they spent too much money on the boomerang design and didn't have any cash left to redesign the sixxas.

Or they knew that an hour with any controller will make you used to it. The SixAxis design is fine. I've never had any trouble with it. And if they DID change it, they would get slammed for "copying the 360"

I despise the GC controller... it's horrible. Anyway, what's funny about all of this is Sony DID try to change their controllers. They showed that so-called boomerang controller and all the fanboys on the internet exploded. Made all kinds of photoshops showing it being used as a boomerang. So Sony went back to their traditional design and now they get slammed for never changing their controller and it's amusing how many times I've now heard people say they wish they had stuck with the boomerang design.

I'm actually fine with the DS controllers overall, though their are certainly things I would change if I could. Primarily I would tighten the sticks. I find how loose they are to be more of an annoyance then their position. And sometimes I wish they would swap the left stickand d-pad just so I could quit having to hear so many people whine about it. I can use either position equally well.

An hour with any controller will NOT make you used to it. An hour with a DS2(and likely 3, since it's the same) make my hands cramp up from the awkward position of the left analog stick.

Oh, and the Boomerang controller has the same problem as the DS2/3 - the stupid left analog stick is in the wrong place!

I've had my handset turn itself off after being idle for awhile (particularly if playing GH).

My only annoyance so far is the on/off button being touch sensitive. The dogs have managed to turn it on more than once.

Your right. It took me less than a hour when i first got my ps3.

I wonder if the tilting presents a problem with that. There are games where you could play a long time without any button presses, only tilting, so they would have to take tilting into consideration when measuring inactivity. However, the tilting may be too sensitive for that.

If the tilt sensor detected tilt when the controller was motionless, that wouldn't be "too sensitive," it would be "inaccurate." Regardless, it would be pretty easy to code the OS/controller drivers to have a threshold of movement that would have to be passed to reset the inactivity timer.

I didn't even realize the PS3 didn't turn off the controllers after inactivity, but then I don't usually leave my consoles on while I'm not using the controller. But I have the Blu-ray remote for my PS3, so I guess if I didn't I'd be using the Sixaxis when watching movies.

I've always been a fan too, but it doesn't get much love here. I really like the button layout, because it reflects the fact that you use some buttons much more than others in nearly every game. The analog sticks weren't the greatest though. The left one bothers my thumb if I play too long, and I have no idea why the right one didn't have a top on it. But I liked the feel of it.

Yeah I doubt that.

The PS3 controller design, which pretty much includes the PS1 and PS2 designs as well, never bothered me. I guess I have small or deformed hands or something.

it's not the actual form, but just the placement of the analog stick. it has become a primary control now. given it's in the same place it was for the PS1, it most likely just feels overly outdated and out of place for a primary means of control for long time gamers. Especially after using the MS 360 controller.. I would love to see the wii remote have more accessible buttons w/ the nunchuck setup. That is by far the best in comfort. I can just lazily sit there (yes, I realize that is counter to the wii's purpose).

I don't necessarily like the boomerang design, but I can acknowledge that it was going in the right direction in terms of ergonomics. The problem? Sony made it look like ass and the analog sticks looked like a dangling ball sack. In other words, they took a design and did TOO much with it. They should've toned down the design and made it more subtle.

No would be copying the 360. It's not like the idea of putting the analog stick in the primary position is new. It's been going back since the dreamcast, IIRC. If anything, the Xbox controllers are copies of the dreamcast controller.

PS3 controllers have very little evolution attached to them.
NES: D pad with two buttons.
SNES: D pad with four face buttons and two shoulder buttons
PS1: D pad with four face buttons and four shoulder buttons. Added a grip to make the controller easier to hold
PS1 Dualshock: Same controller, just with two analog sticks tacked on and rumble.
PS2: Same as the Dualshock, but now you have pressure sensitive buttons. A feature that isn't important in most games.
PS3 Sixaxis: Largely the same as before. No rumble now, but has a tacked on motion sensing support. L2 and R2 are more trigger like, but is largely slippery when you have sweaty hands.
PS3 Dualshock: Same as above, just with rumble...again.

My point is, is that Sony has taken the basic design from the SNES and did nothing with it. The 360's controller has basically derived it's controller from past Sega controllers and actually IMPROVED on them.

I'm sorry for turning this into a sony controller bashing, but it was entirely unintended.

The analog placement never bothered me. I prefer to have the symmetry, especially in two-stick shooters.
