Two motorcyclists killed...

Stories like this keep me from riding, it's just insane how careless people are.

With the number of close calls I have every week in my car the odds are just not enough in my favor.

Just yesterday I was turning left onto the onramp of I-75 to get to work, guy come from the opposite way attempting to turn right onto the onramp, I'm about halfway there when he enters the turn, we continue to close, and I'm thinking is this fucker going to yield or what? Guy looks right at me(eye to eye) while we're less than 20 yards apart and pulls right the fuck out in front of me. Had to nearly lock them up and swerve to avoid plowing right into the side of the guy's minivan.

It was 8:30am and overcast but if you can't see a big black car with xenons coming right at you from 20 yards away or if your brain cannot process that as "I need to wait" then you shouldn't be driving.

she would have just killed someone else some other time.

Possibly... or she may have hit another car, and the occupants might have had a chance, rather than ploughing into a pair of motorcyclists.

The thing is people are retards and don't pay attention. I just don't get how some people can be so blasé about driving over a ton of metal at high speed... so many people seem to treat and think of cars as appliances and driving as their god given right nowadays, rather than as an important skill that requires work and your utmost attention 🙁

we have people regularly get on onramps and then decide to back up to get off the highway.

Not to mention people trying to not only merge onto a 65mph highway at 45mph, but then decide to go all the way to the far left lane.

The attitude is "I am more important and if you hit me I will SUE!"

I am sure many were all for this kind of crap not thinking it through...it gave the city an excuse to burn off some more tax money and pay others.

Much like airbags.

Not sure what you are aiming at with airbags...

You can discuss it if you wish (I am genuinely interested)

Thanks 🙂

God that is stupid...

as is merging at less than traffic speed.

That attitude should really be corrected during driving lessons and before they get a licence!

air bags have been proven not to save the lives they were promoted to. The biggest advantage and why they really came to be is when someone doesn't strap in.

The amount in costs they add to even a simple accident and the risk to occupants are insane.

I thought that airbags were pretty cheap nowadays?

what? an airbag is likely to do MORE damage if you are not belted in. you have to in the proper place(belt keeps you there) for an airbag to work effectively

else you are going to take a blunt force gunshot impact to the chest that can crack your sternum

She may have been careless but really, it is YOUR choice to ride glorified bicycles instead of giant metal boxes filled with equipment to keep you safe. The fact is and will always be that less people will see motorcycles than cars, lights or no lights.

What is the limit? What if roller blades could go 80 mph, would we need bumper stickers saying "watch out for roller bladers"?

oh, so it's the motocyclist's fault that idiot can't use mirrors or her neck correctly?

airbag>hitting steering column.

You need to do some reading.

to the other poster, while airbags have decreased in price you are still talking $1000 for a set usually (driver and passenger only, not counting side bags)...plus labor to R&R and sometimes a windshield due to quite a few passenger designs that will strike it.

for a lot of cars this $1500-3000 extra is a total.

That is the stupidest traffic calming method ever. Speed bumps ftw. (Sleeping policeman to you brits, I believe).

She was careless, end of story. None of the blame goes to the motorcyclists.

Sleeping policemen is a bit archaic. Speed bumps or speed humps is the more common name these days.

Where I live they have these stupid square shaped speed bumps, one on each side of the road. If there's no car coming the other way people move into the middle of the road so they can drive between them.

You know. I was real hesitant when I bought my Spyder. It was just so freaking different than a regular bike.

Fast forward two years of owning it, and I have to say stories like this validate why I ride one now. I have a larger cross section for cagers to see and plenty of lights on the front. If they miss seeing me, they likely would not have seen another car either. I've noticed people at driveways and cross roads notice me far more often than when I was riding my other bikes. I still ride very defensively.

WTF is the point of that traffic device other than to kill people?

ya, those seem ridiculous to me.

i saw a guys shirt get burned off his chest from an airbag when he got hit. it was kind of funny at the time, but it burned his chest as well.

ill still take an airbag to the chest over a steering wheel to the face.

how did this chick not get charged with killing those guys?

Sometimes I think thats its not that drivers don't see motorcycles, its that their brain just doesn't respect it on some subconscious level. People will naturally avoid hitting another 3000lb hunk of metal, but to them a motorcycle is like a fly. They see it but their brain says don't worry about it.

yeah, we need the old day biker gangs to come back and put some oily fear into regular drivers. i just hope they dont call em cagers like the douche you quoted, their evilness would be invalidated by their smug shitheadedness.

I rode the motorcycle in to work again today and saw a few people on the freeway texting or chatting on their cell phones. I want to ride up next to them, bash in a side window or take off a mirror and point to the road ahead. Better yet, if I could rip that fucking phone out of their grubby paws I'd just heave it at the nearest concrete barrier at 60mph.

Lols Jules, better work out a bit first or maybe start with soccer moms.

QFT, my older brother was in a horrendous wreck in '94 driving a vehicle with no bags or shoulder belts ('75 K5 Blazer). The impact with the steering column destroyed most of the bones in the front 1/3 of his skull. It's incredible he survived at all. OTOH, I also had a friend riding in his gf's '99 mercedes slk, and he wasn't wearing his seatbelt. The airbag gave him a bloody nose, a black eye, and some general bruising, but he was otherwise unharmed other than his shoulder as he twisted and hit the door as the car spun.
