Wakefield driver 'failed to see' tragic bikers

Two bikers were killed after a woman drove carelessly at a traffic calming chicane, a jury heard.

Experienced mororcyclists Andrew Burns, 45, and Wayne Walker, 39, died after being hit by a Ford Fiesta driven by Claire Cooper, 26, on Standbridge Lane, Kettlethorpe, Wakefield, on February 13 last year.

Leeds Crown Court heard how the two friends had entered the S-bend of the chicane as Cooper, travelling in the opposite direction, was around 19 metres from give way markings on the approach to the traffic calming measure.

Mark McKone, prosecuting, said Cooper failed to see the two men and continued to enter the chicane.

Mr Burns was thrown from his Harley Davidson machine and had his leg amputated in the impact.

Mr Walker was then struck and hit his head on the bonnet of the car before sliding along the footpath at the side of the road.

Mr McKone said: "The defendant simply did not see that the motorcyclists were within the chicane."

"She failed to see the motorcyclists and it is her failure to see them which makes her driving careless. Particularly as there is a clear view through the chicane, albeit it was dusk, but the motorcyclists had their lights on."

Cooper, of Marshall Avenue, Hall Green, Wakefield, denies two charges of causing death by careless driving. Mr Burns, from Wakefield, and Mr Walker, from Selby, were riding back from Derbyshire at the time of the crash.

Mr McKone said all three vehicles were travelling within the 30mph speed limit when the incident took place. He said there were no witnesses to the collision other then Cooper and her boyfriend.

She said "There was nothing there at all. I was going back to my side of the road and there was just a bright light in front of me. She added: "I saw the bright light and I heard a bang about a second after."

For all you bikers out there - ride safe...

And this is why I always ride aggressively and act as if every car out there is gonna kill me. Defensive driving won't do shit when there's nothing to protect you besides the gear you wear, and even that won't save you from an impact with another vehicle.

That bitch should fry.

You can be the safest rider in the world, you're still at the mercy of ignorant fucks who don't pay attention.

Its traffic calming. It's to slow traffic down. I agree that its bullshit.

I dont see calming I see, 2 lanes going into one, Thats very uncalming.

Who ever approved these so called "Calming" devices are freaking morons.

I can tell you that that should not be on the ground.

WTF is the point of that traffic device other than to kill people?

inorite, whats wrong with stop signs and speed bumps if people are going too fast?

But then again, it's a waste of time to try and apply logic to Englands road system

Looks like a "yield" type system, but makes no fucking sense when the two lanes should never intersect. A fucking speed bump or rumble strips would have been better and cheaper.

Someone with no knowledge of the real world... so probably a politician trying to make the streets safer.

It also sounds like it's not the only problem that has occurred there - or at other sites using chicanes.

Traffic calming chicanes

Reported in the Roads/highways category by Mr Dean Foster at 12:49, Thu 25 November 2010
Sent to Wakefield City Council less than a minute later

After several accidents at this location is it time to review the type of traffic calming measures used at this location , vehicles traveling uphill towards the crematorium have right of way and tend to hold there speed and enter other side of carriagway early forcing oncoming traffic exiting the chicane to take adverse action to avoid a collision . It is difficult to judge the speed of oncoming vehicles travelling up the hill and some drivers take there right of way litterally not allowing vehicles travelling away from the crematorium time to exit the chicane.

is that a cemetery right next to that fucking thing? some sort of a sick joke

Some people just don't pay attention while driving. She might have been on the phone or messing with the radio, or just half asleep. All you can really do is assume everyone else on the road is incompetent and do your best to compensate for them

she was merging into the other lane, the least you can do is check to see if there is anything there.

With these 'calming measures', and I hate them too, there is always clear signage stating who has the right of way. She was just a moron. Shame two men had to die.

The people to blame are the 'speed kills' lobby. Ironically, speed controls kill, too.

How can you blame speed control when the driver is clueless?
