Two friends who want to voice chat for free while playing mmo.

Buddy and myself are playing Secret World and enjoying it. Neither one of us really wants to pay for a vent server if we can help it. Is there software available, for free, that would allow us to chat over our headsets and assign a key to speak, such as Left Control for example?

Something straight forward and simple to use, like Vent, would be great. We don't need anything beyond the most basic of communication features. Press a button to talk, let up to listen. That's pretty much it.

Can you recommend something please?
 
Most of the chat servers for TS/Vent/mumble are free and can be set up on your home connections since they require very little bandwidth, you'll need to follow some guides for configuration if you're not very tech savvy.
 
Just use a 1 to 1 call tech like Skype and then its secure between the two of you and you don't need a third server in between.
 
My friend and I just use Google Voice. Its free with good sound quality but it does have a couple of draw backs.

1) Its a little snobbish with bandwidth. If it doesn't have enough it flat out drops you.
2) No additional volume adjustments. What you have is what you get.
3) The mic is always open.
 
Thanks for all the advice. I found a 5 slot vent server for less than a dollar per month and just went that route. I mean, that's basically free. My friend is used to Vent and has to do nothing but set up a new connection which will be easy for him.
 
Does ventrilo still have ridiculous latency? You don't realize how much it actually breaks up a conversation until you switch to something like mumble. I'm surprised people still use vent after CELT came out.

Been using the same vent server for years with all the people I play online with, latency usually only 40ms or so for me and the only times it's ever higher than that are a result of userside connection issues for us. Haven't tried Mumble but Vent's been really good to us.
 
Skype is easiest IMO.

Just curious, anyone used skype with a larger group? I regularly use skype for League of Legends with friends up to 5-6 people in a call, and it seems to work okay, does it break down with more people or does it remain usable even with larger crowds?
 
Steam, because it uses the same technology as Skype, and it's probably already installed on your PC.
 
Vent and Teamspeak are free for small servers. For 2 people, the bandwidth requirements aren't very bad.

Otherwise Mumble works, Steam works, Skype Works, and other apps like "Roger Wilco" probably still work if they still exist too.

I'd go with Vent only because that's what I'm most comfortable running on my slackware server, and my friends already all have vent installed....
