Shock. Your body will automatically go into shock from injury like that. It's automatic, you have no control over it.
Stop the bleeding, keep them warm. You can see tourniquets applied.

A team of Newtown parents who were running the Marathon in tribute to the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre are reportedly safe.
I've suffered a catastrophic injury to a limb (not as catastrophic as that poor guy), and I can tell you that there's very little pain. It hurts, but not in the devastating way you'd think. More like a big block of ice that throbs and aches. Back when my injury occurred the docs explained it by saying that the brain doesn't transmit pain over a certain level, because it doesn't do you any good.
I'm in lower Manhattan NYC and I'm constantly hearing sirens out my window now. No doubt there's a precautionary measure in place to comb the city just in case. And here I am numb to the fact that this is just the world we live in. :\

i was watching a show about military paramedics. PJ's i think what they called them. anyway they deal with such injuries and said the pretty much same. the body just wont' transmit such injuries. people can be mentally ok (for a while) even with both legs shredded.
Wow... "best" video yet. Shows the size and impact it had.HQ Video of the explosion and aftermath.
