Twisted, dark, perfect: Mortal Kombat gets a new viral ad ( a little bit NSFW)

Well it's been just that, talk.
As he said, it doesn't appear there is actually a movie in production. Doesn't mean there isn't someone perfecting a script and recruiting talent right now.
But it would appear they are definitely just gauging interest at the moment.

Here's to hoping it's just more of a viral MK interest gauging tool, and not a demo of what they are thinking about. Or, perhaps it is such a demo, but if it is I hope viewer reaction shares my opinion - such a reimagination is just not right. Reimagination of the original movies and minor changes to the mythos, sure... completely dumping everything that is MK and merely keeping the good guy v. bad guy approach and the character names? No thanks.
If Subzero can't shoot ice from his hands, Scorpion doesn't have a creepy grabby vine come out of his hands, and Raiden can't make lightning - I will be super pissed. Oh, and it needs hot chicks with blades. I can slightly forgive the former as the long as the latter is very true. 🙂

But come on, MK is entirely based around that crazy mythos as much as it is about fighting. An underground fighting championship is cool, but at least make it merely half the concept. It'd be a neat segue into the head man being some soul-sucking emperor and brings his crazy goons from another world/realm after only the good fighters remain.

While I can see where you're coming from, many video game plots don't translate to movies well. Just see the first few Mortal Kombat movies, I've seen at least the first two (was there three?), and while entertaining, they were bleh, especially with the sub-zero, scorpion and reptile costumes. I actually liked the Street Fighter movie more.

This one looks awesome by being believable, to some extent, and by appearing to have a more serious tone. No idea how it may end up, but I'm for it as it looks right now.

MK is not about pure realistic fights.

The first two, while as movies were a little shy of good, but quite above "meh", they still serve as possibly the best video game movies ever.
They were true to the roots of the mythos, and games.

There were two movies, btw.

If you don't want to see a faithful adaptation of the MK movie, don't ruin it for those of us who would rather an MK movie actually be about the MK tournament, and not just another underground fight story.
😉

BTW, the costumes were perfectly accurate for Subzero and Scorpion.
Have you played the games?
Subzero is my favorite character. That still remained true while watching the movies. 🙂

Scorpion was amazingly done in the original movies. GET OVER HERE

I subtract points from Subzero for the gay bucket freezing stunt that killed him (IIRC).

the fight choreography in the original MK movie was amazing. the only lame fight really was the sonya fight, it was pretty weak. the sub zero one is also fairly weak because it is so short and he went out like a chump.

the scorpion, reptile, and shang tsung fights however are simply amazing and some of the best fights i've seen in a movie from a hollywood flick.

loved how they incorporated tons of special moves and stuff into it as well, especially johnny cages friendship.

and /facepalm at the guy complaining about scorpion and sub zero's costumes.

Boo. That was just a teaser. There is no movie, not even in the works.

Update: Actress Jeri Ryan, the actress portraying Sonya Blade in the video, has confirmed via Twitter that this is a short film created by a director to sell Warner Bros. on his Mortal Kombat pitch. "It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film," Ryan says on her Twitter page, adding " I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was." Thanks to Zimnick for pointing us towards Jeri's updates!

That looked pretty good. I'd probably watch a full length version if it was decently written.

I does bother me that Baraka has a bunch of piercings. Wouldn't those tear when being repeatedly hit in the face?

I will be amazed if one of the Hollywood studios doesn't pick this one up, since it has the potential to become a very good film.

Considering all the crap that actually gets the green light.. Mega shark vs giant octopus... Ok, that was an actual movie that an actual studio spent actual money to produce. I tried to watch it for the campyness it could have had, but it was just a waste of time.
"The Happening" --- Nothing EVER happened, and that was a multi-million dollar movie

This has some edge to it and darkness, and I think with it's current path it could be good. It could also be mega shark vs giant octopus II.

Well, we got 2 MK movies true to the game and background, so I wouldn't mind one that's "re-imagined". Kind of like the Terminator movies and the TV show; same backstories, but I think of them completely differently.

The Sub-zero and Scorpion costumes were true to the game, but when they have living people wearing them, I just shudder. I don't remember if Reptile ever made it into either of the two MK movies.

Only video game movie I've like-liked is Hitman. All the other ones are only entertaining to me in the B-movie sense.

I liked this video, but I could also see it becoming quite cheesy. Hopefully it comes to fruition though as I would be interested in checking it out as long as they kept it dark and R rated as it appears to be in that video. Not much on the IMDB page right now, but lots of discussion which is a good thing: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293429/

Sci-Fi made for TV movies hardly count.

Or excuse me, Sci-fy

Reptile starts out in MK2 as a small chameleon that doesn't look anything like the character (much to my original anger). But when Lui Kang is in the overrealm or whatever the fuck it's called he grabs the annoying spy and throws him into a large stone statue and out bursts the real Reptile complete with face mask and spitting acid. Those movies rocked. I love the fact that they had me fooled on whether Reptile was really going to be in the movie, unfortunately they dealt with him so quickly considering he was my favorite character at the time.

Could this kill it though?
Warner Bros. looking to reboot franchise, but Threshold Entertainment filed new breach of contract lawsuit to prevent it from moving forward.

From the comments in the Production Notes section of the IMDB entry.

Yeah I saw that, but I believe that is relatively old. I imagine this is coming out because something is in the works for E3 (a movie or a new game, who knows). I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Reptile was in the first movie, he was the weird lizard-like creature doing chameleon things, acting stealthy, and then transformed into a humanoid to fight Liu Kang before being turning back and getting killed in lizard-form.

Also, what I wish would have happened in the 2nd movie, is it Cyrax and Smoke would have been explained. It's in the story universe, but I don't recall it being discussed.
I believe it was Smoke, who in the story universe, is given his "humanity" back. Can't remember at all though.

As for video-game movies in general, I really liked Silent Hill. It wasn't a high-dollar movie, but I feel it captured the video game feel pretty well. Silent Hill 2 has been in development hell though it seems, and the ending for SH kind of annoyed me, just didn't feel right.
