So, this video, it's really well produced, shot well, nice editing and effects.

but, wtf?

I'd like to see a movie in the same style and story as that one, but at the same time it pisses off the MK fanboy part of me. The entire concept of MK is rooted in one very persistent mythos - you can't just wipe clean that mythos and say.

And Scorpion in league with Jax and Sonya? LOL

Obviously it changes the lore a bit, but I think it has potential. It won't be a great movie, but it could be pretty entertaining. Jeri Ryan as Sonya? Hot.

I liked the original MK movies. I thought they were very true to the games. This looks like some sort of 're-imagining' although it was cool that at least they did barakkas proper fatality.

Interesting anyhow.

it's obviously a movie, and holy fuck it is going to suck donkey tits.

No, it's not a movie. There is no MK movie in production. It's a short film designed to gauge interest in the franchise. Warner Brothers bought the movie rights to the MK franchise last year and enlisted director Kevin Tancharoen, who made that Fame movie remake last year, to do this short film as a concept for what they'd envision a more "realistic" MK movie looking like.

Of course, if there is a strong positive reaction to the video that could mean they may ultimately make a feature length movie out of it, but with no promises that any of the same talent would be used.

I hope it doesn't suck. It's weird they chose to make Baraka more real (he's no longer a part of a mutant race but rather a human who went the way of self-mutilation) yet Reptile gets a pass as a freak of nature. Otherwise, the dark reboot seems to be all the rage these days, so I hope it works for MK, it definitely needs to reflect the gritty nature of the video games rather than the please-everyone aspect of the movies which came out.

i will say too that 2 things pissed me off...

1. Jax name was spalled "Jacks" with the on cleared off.
2. Baraka's hair

those are nit picky things but yea again i did think it was pretty badass.

and MK1 is still the best video game movie to date.

oh yea, and E3 is just around the corner, the actual product this is for will probably be announced there.

There has been talk of a new MK movie now for some time.

Well it's been just that, talk.
As he said, it doesn't appear there is actually a movie in production. Doesn't mean there isn't someone perfecting a script and recruiting talent right now.
But it would appear they are definitely just gauging interest at the moment.

Here's to hoping it's just more of a viral MK interest gauging tool, and not a demo of what they are thinking about. Or, perhaps it is such a demo, but if it is I hope viewer reaction shares my opinion - such a reimagination is just not right. Reimagination of the original movies and minor changes to the mythos, sure... completely dumping everything that is MK and merely keeping the good guy v. bad guy approach and the character names? No thanks.
If Subzero can't shoot ice from his hands, Scorpion doesn't have a creepy grabby vine come out of his hands, and Raiden can't make lightning - I will be super pissed. Oh, and it needs hot chicks with blades. I can slightly forgive the former as the long as the latter is very true. 🙂

But come on, MK is entirely based around that crazy mythos as much as it is about fighting. An underground fighting championship is cool, but at least make it merely half the concept. It'd be a neat segue into the head man being some soul-sucking emperor and brings his crazy goons from another world/realm after only the good fighters remain.

Scorpion has always been one of my favorite characters in the Kombatverse. And I'll agree with some of the posters here that they're taking out one of the core themes that made the games and subsequent movies/TV show interesting to me. It looks nice and, if you never spent time playing the games you'd probably love this trailer. But to me, it seems like a sort of a letdown.

At some point they did have people signed on for it but once WB picked it up it all went quiet.

The only people ever "signed on" to the movie were the writers. There was a script written, then the whole thing got axed.

By the way, if you want to watching something connected to this project, rent the new movie Undisputed III. The fight choreography was done in both this short and Undisputed III by a guy named Larnell Stovall, and his work in Undisputed III is AWESOME. A couple of the guys from this short are also in that movie (Baracka I know for sure anyway). So, if you want to see what the fight scenes in a MK movie might look like should this concept move forward, rent that and see. It's a good flick. (Undisputed II is also quite good, and stars Michael Jai White)

ah, OK. production values looked to high to be for a video game (uh, not that those are cheap, of course). I guess with a bunch of no-names, they can keep cost down for a short.

I don't like dark movies, and lately there have been a lot of them. Turn on a light for pete's sakes.
