Look, if they were trying to initiate network connections when not asked for by the user, people would have noticed since it's not hard to detect these things with various utilities. But "windows update" is the perfect cover to go around and gather information about your system and files, including sending stuff from the registry which could include lists of all you installed software....

Linux is so... 1998.

There's nothing wrong with Linux.

There's plenty wrong with Linux.

x10 things wrong for Windows.

I never said Windows was better. ;)

BSD > Linux > Windows

I haven't played with BSD yet. Maybe I'll build myself a sh|tbox for BSD fun. :D

At various times I have 3-8 machines running OpenBSD.

The trouble is, you could not trust any application on the host machine, and the data could easily be disguised in legitimate looking traffic.

n0cmonkey, when I mentioned you were not being on topic, I was just referring to your "blah blah..." post, not any other post, which I agree are mostly on topic, so hopefully you will not post any more "blah blah" posts.

FreeBSD has 3d drivers from nVidia. XFree86 supports the Geforce in 2d fairly well. I'm not sure about the Audigy2. I don't have one. Pretty sure there isn't support in OpenBSD though.

I knew what you were referring to. I've seen your threads before, I understand how it works, and I will continue to make more "blah blah" posts.

That's why I'm running SuSE. That and RedHat are the only two default installs that work flawlessly with both cards. :)

I reference the hardware compatibility list when I purchase hardware. ;)

You purchase software? Bwuahahahaha. N00b. ;) :p I got a crapload of cool stuff for free from Novell, including several versions of SuSE. :D

Did you know that whenever you fill out anything, the government can find out all your information

Notice I said hardware. But yes, I usually buy copies of OpenBSD every 6 months or so. It helps keep the project going. And SuSE sent me the same stuff. It's sitting in a box with a bunch of other mail I don't want to deal with.

Peoples, this is a serious issue which the public needs to be aware of, ergo this thread is a public service anouncement to enlighten all the unsuspecting users whose information security is being compromised.

Those who don't know WTF they're doing deserve to get screwed. Those who do know what they're doing aren't going to have problems.

You are worse than most conspiracy theorists. Atleast they provide some "proof," however far fetched, that something not right is going on. You say nothing more than "it could happen," and expect us to nod our heads.

If you really think that a company could/would be taking this kind of information, turning off automatic updates will not stop it. The only way to be truly sure is to write all of the software you use. The best thing to do is to use something you can trust. You've expressed a lack of trust in Microsoft products, so FIND SOMETHING BETTER.

There is no issue here, these aren't the droids you're looking for. Man, you smoked the wrong stuff tonight. That paranoia is running away with the last two of your freaking brain cells. Get on a program or something. Somewhere out there, there are 12 steps with your name on them.

Interesting logic there, Nik.

So, since I don't know how to fix every part of my car, I deserve to get screwed by a mechanic?
Since many other people don't know ASP.NET development as well as I do, they deserve to be screwed by me when I make them a quote for a website?
