I don't think I've ever had any other kind. I just assumed it grew on the vine in the can like that.

Boneless! Leg!

Shoulder! And slow roast it!

Slow roasting a shoulder makes it less fatty, and lovely and tender without worrying about the right level of pink to suit everyone.

Weird question, but off hand do you know about how much lamb costs where you're at? I've always wanted to try cooking it, but I've never seen anything at the grocery other than a small chop for $16-$20 per pound. Turkey is about $0.69 per pound. I had lamb once at a restaurant and I liked it, but I never really see it anywhere.

Me and my daughter made homemade a couple years ago. Super easy, and tastes better imo. I like canned also though. That's all I had growing up.

Shoulder is about £8 a kilo from my local farm.

Chops are always stupid expensive given that you need loads of them!

Shoulder is one of the cheapest cuts but like all cheap cuts if you cook it properly you can end up with something better than the expensive cuts.

My sister's family likes turkey. If I cook one, it will be for them.

As for lamb, I don't have much choice in type of cuts. I can pretty much get any type of beef and pork cuts but lamb is different. Lamb isn't that popular here so I only have access to boneless leg and the more expensive lamb chops. No shoulder. So if I cook lamb, it will be the boneless leg. And I like to smoke. So I will be using my smoker. I don't have to worry about the level of pink because I trained my family over the years to eat med-rare because I cook so much beef. Now they complain if I accidentally overcook the meat and it's not med-rare. But for my sister's family, I have to cook everything well done. Which is why I don't like cooking things like prime rib roast at family gathering because I have to cut and sear their portions separately before I serve it to them. But I might still cook prime NY Strip for Thanksgiving. I have 11 pounds that has been wet aging for about 45 days in my fridge. It should be ready and in optimal condition by next week.
 
What kind of jackass doesn't eat turkey on Thanksgiving? That's the whole point. Eat a crapload of food at like 2:30p.m., fall asleep for a few hours, wake up, eat dessert, repeat for the rest of Thanksgiving vacation.
 
I just checked my garage fridge and it's the prime brisket that's about 45 days wet aged. Prime NY Strip is only about 30 days. Which is still fine. I also have pork belly that I was going to experiment with pink curing salt and make pork belly pastrami. I might do cure lamb leg and make lamb pastrami too.

Trying to find lamb shoulder is too much work here. And it will be way too expensive if you find it. That's why we use pork shoulder or beef shoulder clod. Pork shoulder is about $1.29 /lb and beef shoulder clod is about $2.79 /lb. We smoke it and make pulled pork and pulled beef sandwiches with it. It would be super easy to do the same with lamb but availability and price is the problem. I live in right smack of pork country and pork is crazy cheap here. So everyone does pulled pork.
 
The best turkey is worse than pretty much any decently prepared beef, pork, lamb, duck, chicken or seafood. So no turkey on holidays. Or any other time of year.
 
No one has mentioned goose or is that more for Christmas or out of favor? I dont food shop so I dont even know if it is available much anymore.

Its good but very greasy.

I am curious about this lamb shoulder and the aged beef, here I thought I needed to cook my steaks within a week of the sell by date.

Thing is that out of roast potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and turkey the turkey is the bit that I'd miss the least!
