Curfew is a joke... won't happen, don't worry. There's no one to enforce it, or anyone who can or wants to enforce it.
Isn't the curfew directive coming from the military? That's what it says on the BBC.

It's coming from the "presidency". The fact that the military isn't "enforcing" it speaks a lot.

OMAR SOLIMAN -chief of intelligence- has just been sworn in as vice-president.

What does that mean? Isn't he part of the problem/establishment?

He is. But he's the furthest away from the establishment. Don't forget that the regime is so deeply rooted, it won't be 100% replaced with an outsider.

Omar Soliman isn't associated with any corruption or anti-civilian violence. It's a good step because it means Mubarak isn't continuing as president.

This guy is a professional dictator... he dismissed the police off the streets, and unleashed thugs on homes and malls. Now everyone demonstrating needs to go back home to protect his own neighborhood himself. He doesn't care if everyone dies, if everyone is robbed. It's not his priority, it never was.

Some thugs were arrested by civilian groups!! They found government security IDs on them, and government issued weapons!!!! Mubarak didn't "dismiss" the police, he converted them into thugs to force people back home!!!

THE POLICE ARE NOW ROBBING THE PEOPLE.

Its not just a matter of the army now enforcing various orders to crack down, its not becoming a matter of troops defecting and joining the protesters. With a base of hundreds of years of human history, when the army joins the protests, its almost always the end of the current ruler.

Obama is an idiot. He once again picks the wrong side. When he had a chance to stand behind the protest in Iran he sat on his hands.

Egypt is different. It controls the Suez Canal.
There goes any chance of recovery.

$4 per gallon gas? Think higher.
$100 per barrel of oil? Think higher.

Oil is going up, and with an Al Qaeda puppet government in there, things are going to get a lot worse in the region.

The mosques where my family lives have all called the men and youths to stay on the street with whatever tools they have... they are maintaining shifts to protect against the police thugs. My brother-in-law and his neighbors arrested another police thug a few hours ago and confiscated his weapon.

I'm confused... why is Obama an idiot?

He's an idiot because he's not voicing support for a brutal dictator so Americans can enjoy lower gasoline prices. Also, Al Qaeda.

CC has admitted that he knew less than he thought he did wrt democracy in Egypt. Also, your question is very vague. Do you have a specific one?

Sort of like when any major city wins a football or basketball championship. :D

You shoulda seen us take to the streets after the Saints won the Superbowl. Ain't nobody can throw a party like Nawlins and I mean nobody. It was amusing listening to a few commentators the day after the game try to compare what our parade was going to be like with other cities Superbowl parades. Psst, we kinda know how to do that whole parade thing down here a tad bit better than the other NFL cities. Oh yeah, we didn't fuck shit up or burn the city down either like some assholes were predicting.

As far as Egypt, there shouldn't even be a debate regarding the people deciding what they want in a government. It is kinda their necks on the line and they are the ones that will kinda have to live under the government.

If the above is true then absofuckinglutely. Again, if the above is true, I say its time that some of those captured police/thugs start swinging from the light poles. Let em swing till you can't stand the smell to show any other would be thugs the consequences. Then again, what I say is irrelevant. It is up to the Egyptians to do what they think is right.

Obama is facing a situation no other president has faced in 40 years since the the middle east peace process. Obviously, he needs to support the people STRONGLY, which he has, but he can't completely disavow of Mubarak because it's not clear yet that he's going, or that the regime is changing.

Every word he or his administration utters could be taken against him depending on how things play out.

A bad democracy against our national security interests should never be supported. When a country like Egypt has a significant population of extremists (80% believe that adulterers should be stoned to death) it's easy for Taliban-class leaders to win elections, take over, then abolish the democracy, kill off these youth, and be our mortal enemy. But go ahead have fidelity to a word rather than logic, liberty, protection of minority, and self preservation. Worked good in Iran.

Muslim Brotherhood: Arabs will topple leaders allied with the United States...

Jan 29, 1:10 PM (ET)

By JAMAL HALABY

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) - The leader of Jordan's powerful Muslim Brotherhood warned Saturday that unrest in Egypt will spread across the Mideast and Arabs will topple leaders allied with the United States.

Hammam Saeed's comments were made at a protest outside the Egyptian Embassy in Amman, inspired by massive rallies in neighboring Egypt demanding the downfall of the country's longtime president, Hosni Mubarak.

I somewhat agree with TareX, almost no one saw this coming, but still in only one short week or so, Mubarak may be already history.

The more important thing is where is this going, we could get a somewhat Muslim fundi takeover like Iran or the Taliban in Afghanistan, or a new Egyptian dictator just like Mubarak taking over, we can get a pro-Western government, or we can end up with an entirely new, never before seen Arab model where the interests of the people are put forth. And perhaps an Arab Model that will sweep the mid-east.

I can only put forward the fact that The USA was just that better never before seen government after the USA won its independence from England. And that many governments copied our constitution, but only we in the USA have been able to keep it working.

But the other thing to note is that many Egyptians are non-violently asking US reporters just trying to cover the news, How clueless can the US government have become, After
all ole Hosni had been hosing the Egyptian people for 30 Years and everyone knows it. But in 30 years the US government never questioned Hosni policies.

And now the US government finds that the USA has zero influence as a result. So events will enfold that way they do and the USA can only hope it goes our way, because we forfeited the ability to be credible. In short the USA is up the creek without a paddle to steer by, as all kinds of Mid-Eastern dice are being rolled.
