TUNA!

My wife's doctor limited her tuna intake to once every 2 weeks to minimize any effects (if any) on the baby.

oh, im not pregnant 😛
nor am i woman or child, for that matter.
i was just curious cause i started eating tuna every other day after workin out and i love it but then my buddy advised against it so i was just checkin up...

I like to go to a place called Oriental City near me, its a Japanese(originally)/Chinese/Korean shopping mall, its not a massive US size place, conventional UK size...lol...but they have a bunch of general shops (books, music, furniture, estate agents etc) but also a supermarket with mostly oriental goods, and a food court similar to those found in Japan and other Eastern countries. They have a fantastic fish market there that brings in all sorts of fish from various seas, but the one i like the most is the Tuna they get, the Blue Fin they have is gorgeous, its as fresh as can be, only been on ice for transit, not stored frozen for ages.....

rub a little oil onto it, crack a fair amount of black pepper and a tiny bit of rock salt on both sides...then straight in a pan as a steak thats a little under an inch thick, no oil in the pan tho, could use a griddle if u want chargrill effect........when the tuna is not far from finished cooking put in a layer of thickly chopped green and red chilis, then rest the tuna on them like a bed and turn up the heat, the chilis will most likely burn, make sure a window is open, but it will give the tuna a nicely spicy taste and a gorgeous aroma. (if the chilis didnt burn you can keep them to eat in the dish, but usually they are too burnt to be tasty)

In another pan, you get some beansprouts, stir fry them up in some oil, then add some thin but not fine egg noodles after a little while, a splurge of dark Soy sauce (to your taste), some cracked black pepper, then once the noodles are heated through nicely, make a hole in the centre of the pan, break a couple eggs into a cup and mix up the yolk and white a bit, while doing that turn your pan up to a fairly fierce heat, pour the egg mix into the hole, let it sit for a few moments....then use a small spatula to turn the egg around a bit so it doesnt stick to the bottom and the top cooks some more by glooping to the bottom.....then once the egg has a thickish consistency, just toss the pan a few times, i guess this is similar to how u cook chowmein, but not having seen someone cook chowmein i wouldnt know, this is just something i worked out to do myself...lol.

Anyhow, if you like a simple but tasty dinner then just put the noodle mix onto a plate, lay the tuna on top and et voila 🙂

If you want though you can create more by adding coloured peppers, aubergine, courgette, whatever takes your fancy, or by doing a sauce, quite often store bought sauces now are quite tasty, but nothing beat your own stuff, sometimes while cooking the tuna i do it in a coconut milk based sauce of my own, using coconut milk (duh), lemongrass, coriander, the red/green chilis, and a big dash of white wine, however be careful the sauce needs to be condensed a bit so you will probably have to take the tuna out before the sauce is finished, but once out you can turn up the heat and reduce the sauce quickly...

anyhow, give it a try if you like......its a good recipe that i use most of the time i have a nice bit of poisoned tuna...lol

im English, so i think some of what i said would have different names in other countries..lol
beansprouts i think are also called beanshoots, possibly other names too....
aubergine i believe is called eggplant in the US? (very dark purple coloured vegetable)
courgette is like a kind of cucumber i guess you could say, but not really eatable raw, kinda needs to be cooked.

if you dont know the other things, i would say you should get a book of cooking ingredients and bone up on stuff......seriously, one way to enjoying life is to cook good food and enjoy eating it....nothing more satisfying than sitting down with a glass of wine and a really nice dinner you made yourself that usually you would pay a fortune for in a restaurant 🙂

my standard advice is to try a little more Tabasco sauce.

i think steaks are a little too fibrous, but the idea is intriguing😉

Chunk Light is cheaper too.

Anyone else eat tuna straight out of the can like I do? 😀

I do! 🙂 I gotta drain it first though, so I don't make a mess.

Not yet, but how do you know you won't?

IIRC, mercury is not metabolized, and stays in you. The mercury you accumulate over your lifetime will have some very bad effects.

Heh,

We used to play with mercury when we were kids. No one knew the risks back then but it was cool watching the mercury bead up.

I look at it this way...if it's not mercury in the fish, it's the hormones in the beef or the pesticides covering the plants. Whatever you eat, you're going to get something in your body that's not meant to be there anyway. How many people here drink alcohol or smoke?

Folks, folks, folks.
It takes a lot of mercury to kill you. You will probably just go insane....which probably isn't all that bad when you're 80 anyway 🙂

Correct. Do some searches on the hatters (hat makers) of Englan/Europe. This is where the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland came from. They used mercury to cure the hats or some how in the processing, and the hatters would go nuts over time, thus the "Mad" Hatter.

edit: It's still not supposed to be good for pregnant women/children as it's linked to birth defects, well it's not good for anyone, but you get the point.

courgette = zucchini, from the squash family of vegetables.

Mercury doesn't kill you or take years off your life. It causes neural damage.

Edit: Also, farmed tuna isn't going to have any less mercury than wild tuna. All are grown in the same ocean water.

I believe the level of mercury is less in canned tuna than if you ate the actual fish. Albeit there's mercury in a lot of fishies.

Yes there are a lot of fish that pregnant women should not eat AT ALL, including tuna. I mean, if eating 2 cans a week will harm your baby, why would you eat 1?

http://archives.cnn.com/2001/HEALTH/parenting/04/12/fish.pregnant/

Under the FDA's current recommendations, pregnant women can safely eat up to 12 ounces per week of cooked fish not on the risk list. But Richard Wiles, the Environmental Working Group's senior vice president, said even that amount could cause problems.

"Hundreds of thousands of women would get unsafe exposures to mercury if they followed the FDA's advice and ate freely of all fish in the food supply except the four that they've prohibited during pregnancy," Wiles said.

He said mercury contamination is equal to lead contamination as a public health issue affecting children.

Last December, the Clinton administration announced that mercury emissions from power plants pose a significant health hazard and proposed regulations to reduce them by 2004. An EPA official now says that decision is "under review" and that "no decisions have been made yet."

I was trying to find a site that listed the amount of mercury in different fish species. There are a lot that I wouldn't bother eating, including some that are lower on the food chain than tuna.

Once some guys were riding the entire New York City subway system straight through and they were at about hour 28 of the trip and it was 5am and most of the guys were sleeping but one guy was up and he decided to eat some tuna so he opened up the can of tuna and tried to drain the water/oil out the window of the subway car while it was moving but the water/oil just ran down the window of the subway car and the smell woke up some of the other guys and they were mad about it.
