Tennessee is about to implement a similar program funded by the lottery. It sounds good as long as those people that make $6 hour keep plunking those paychecks down for lottery tickets.

ahhh damn i can't access my february ursa statement.

anyways there is no "tuition" fee for students, but you wind up paying nearly 4k (well for me it was 4k) in fees. education fees, association fees, every fee you can think of, i was charged for it.

now the education fees have gone up almost 30% for the uc's.

dear me college is NOT FREE in california.

the uc's and the csu's are state subsidized... the privates charge up the wazoo.

I ended up paying about $16K in student loans (which went towards tuition, housing, etc) for 4yrs of college @ UCD.

Please do show us an example of a free school without grants or schollarships.
If you do infact find a school thats free I think I'm moving to California.

There are a lot of free tuition programs that students can sign up for in Indiana that will pay your way as long as you don't get arrested and maintain a C average.

Yep, Georgia's lotto-funded HOPE scholarship is the shiznet. A few people have mentioned cutting it back, as the lotto is apparently pulling in less money nowadays, but all politicians are saying that the college scholarships will be the last portion touched (the georgia lotto also funds a bunch of other stuff, including state-sponsored daycare, etc.).

Basically, maintain a 3.0 throughout undergrad at a state school, and tuition is free. Go to a private institution (which I did my freshman year), and get $3k/year free, plus another $1k/year for the Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant. HOPE also gives $150/semester for books. It covers up to 127 semester hours of credit, of which I will be out by next semester. Good thing I'm graduating :)

HOPE doesn't pay for housing, but it will cover extra fees and such (activities, etc.). So basically, we pay for room and board, and the state pays for everything else.

Oh yeah, and GOOOOO DAWGS!

it's almost 2800 a year to go to a CSU now. "registration fees"

with that said... we don't pay tuition per unit though. It's *really not that bad* compared to out of state students here. they pay like $281 per unit last time i checked.

i pay 2800 for 21 units + living expenses
they pay 8701 for 21 units + living expenses

it's just subsidized loans... i'll hopefully have money to pay it back :D

Things I wished I got:

Pell Grant
Cal Grant A/B

Those two alone can cover tuition, room and board can be covered via school grants and other "free" money programs, but only for poor people. But then I see these kids, get their stipend for their room and board, blow it on rims on their car, new stereo, new computers, arg. My silly taxes help keep the free education pork barrel alive for these wasteful people.

Where the HELL are you getting that College is "free"?

UCLA = ~ $19,000 a year last I checked
Cal State = ~$12-15,000 (I think?)
Community college = $150-400 per semester (cheap but not free)

UC's are cheap if you are a CA resident, but far from free. In fact, even as CA resident, it was cheaper for me to go to an Ivy League private school than it was to go to UCBerkeley, because of financial aid grants.

Jeez - I had a 3.81 in a well-ranked high school, and my parents are getting zilch from the U of M. Then again, our state is actually DOING something about its red-inked budget instead of bringing the circus to town.

People that afford a late model Mercedes for their teenager should not get zilch anyhow Hell your Benz would pay for a big part of your education sell it and get a chevy pay your school and thank your parents. <insert vomit emoticon here> Sorry the more of his posts I read the bigger he pumps his ego.

Yeah, I was about to point out that the HOPE program here in GA is funded by the lottery. I'm hoping it's still around by the time I have college-age kids as I don't even want to think about tuition prices 18 years from now. :frown:

"Tuition is free for INSTATE residents only and doesn't apply to private schools."

No, it's not Miri! Why can't you believe those who have lived in California for long and gone through the educational system?

You may be thinking of the fact that in-state students paid the regular tuition, whereas out of state students had to pay astronomically. However, a recent bill was supposed to help illegal immigrants and out of state residents to pay the same tuition as in-state students. If anything, California sucks up money (i.e., taxation) from its citizens and doesn't give them much in return.

Or maybe you are thinking of residents that qualify for low income; hence grants.
