tuition

because they are a socialist state

there are some others that make scholarship's easily attainable, so they effectively subsidize the state universities

In FL, every high school graduate is eligible to get a 75% or 100% paid scholarship if you've got the right right grades 🙂 That said, I got a 3.2 gpa and 990 SAT (yea, that's right, I'm stupid) in high school and 75% of my tuition is paid for 😛

Georgia has the same thing. If you have a certain GPA, they will pay for your first 30 credits of college, then you must keep a 3.0 GPA to continue getting that assisstance.

Anyway, I think that it's something the CA shouldn't offer (along with many of the hundreds of other wasteful programs the state offers). I just don't understand how CA residents don't understand why they're in a budget crisis.

Yeah, its a joke here in florida, 3.5 and 1250 (or 1300 I forget) will get you 100% I also get $300 per semester for books. Couple that with some other scholarships I have and I go for free, and have money left over for "school related expenses"

man are you people lucky. a 3.5 to get a full ride?!?!?! In Ohio, a 4.0 sometimes doesn't even give you any money.

Hmmm...many of my HS friends in California had 3.5 or higher GPA's - they attended the University of California schools and are still repaying their school loans. I think income plays a big part in how much Federal Pell/California Grants one gets.

I went to grad school at a UC school (UC-Hastings College of the Law in SF), and it was far from free (though still much cheaper than a comparable private school). Ah well . . .

My boss from an old job has a daughter who's moving to Cali. Going to do a one-year stint at a community college and get her 1-year residency and then go to UCLA.

Might consider sending my daughter out to do the same 😉

Jeez - I had a 3.81 in a well-ranked high school, and my parents are getting zilch from the U of M. Then again, our state is actually DOING something about its red-inked budget instead of bringing the circus to town.

Has always been "free"; however, only recently has the state been in deep financial trouble. Davis cut the funding in *half*(student pays more now), and the effect is evident in every classroom.

Yeah I was gonna say...I have never heard of this free college you talk about? Maybe if you are poor then they will give you some money, but I got NOTHING.

excuse me? free college?

*looks at her student loans*

ahhh damn i can't access my february ursa statement.

anyways there is no "tuition" fee for students, but you wind up paying nearly 4k (well for me it was 4k) in fees. education fees, association fees, every fee you can think of, i was charged for it.

now the education fees have gone up almost 30% for the uc's.

dear me college is NOT FREE in california.

the uc's and the csu's are state subsidized... the privates charge up the wazoo.

College in California is not free. Where the hell did you get that idea?

Just because some people can get grants or scholarships does not make college free.

Please, show me an example of a free California college.

Oh, college is free in California? You should have told me this secret before I went through so much agony trying to make up my tuition fees every semester.

Now I have to investigate this matter for my future offsprings. Woooooooohoooooo! I knew there was a reason I chose California and paid tax duly. It's the best state! I'll be rewarded for all of my efforts! Wooooohooooo!

Hon', you may really have California mixed up with the UK.
