Thank you TSA PreCheck/Nexus/Global Entry, well worth the $50/5 years.

In the U.S., the new security measures do not apply to passengers enrolled in TSA PreCheck, the program that lets travelers who submit to a government background check use expedited screening lines. Such travelers do not need to remove their shoes, belts or light outerwear or pull liquids or electronics out of their carry-on bags.

I need to upgrade to GEOS / SENTRI because of all the travel I am doing... will save me time. Though some airports have CLEAR that is a 3rd party thing. LAX has it. Might be worth too.

I was skeptical of Clear at first, but now that it's at ATL, I am happy I have it. I got it free through Delta, but I'm not sure I'd pay for it each year. It can save a lot of time of you are running late though.

Getting the global entry is such a pain in the ass. I signed up in like February for it, and the closest appointment they had was late May. Well since that was 3 months away from when I signed up for the appointment, I assumed I would get a notification email about the appointment. So that day came and went in May and I completely forgot about it and think I was on vacation.

Then when I realized this, I signed up for another appointment, and that isn't until September 29th. This time I set a google calendar notification though. But holy shit, to not have an email system in place to notify you of the upcoming appointment that you set up months prior is really dumb.

And don't get me started about the "portal" you log into in order to get it all initially set up. It looks like something made in the angelfire and geocities era.

Well so is not taking the personal responsibility to setup your own reminder about your appointment when its easy to forget because its months in advance 😉 Its been a while since I got mine but they used to occasionally add more dates closer for whatever reason (I kept checking and was able to get an appt 4 weeks after I signed up when they opened more slots) and some places accept walk ins if they aren't busy (I guess SFO has specific walk in times too). Its not a comprehensive list because DTW isn't on it and they sometimes accept walk ins but this might help if you happen to be near one of these locations:

Yeah yeah I know that too.

I am by BWI which is where mine is set up for now, but there is a chance you can just walk in and get it done? There's also a chance you go in and don't get shit done though?

EDIT:

Wow I also see there is just a building in DC you can go to and they appear to do walkins there too. I may try to do that, that one seems to have a lot more according to that posting.

Hmm... apparently Global Entry does not let you take your kids with you through the line but Pre-Check does. That kinda sucks. Flying to Hawaii next week. Wife will probably put all the tech with me and brave the normal lines with the kids.

Global Entry includes TSA Pre-check but you would only use Global Entry at CBP checkpoints. Enter your Known Traveler Number (KTN) that you get with Global Entry to your airline profile\reservation and as long as your boarding pass shows something like TSA-PRE you can take children 12 or under through the line with you. If one member on a PNR (typically 'the same reservation') is Pre-Check eligible its possible all members on the PNR will get TSA-PRE on their boarding pass. Its not a guarantee though

It wasn't functional when I used it. Half the things I did it would say my session expired. And then they have the date format in some ass backwards format where you enter year/month/day. So much wrong with that site.

And then they don't have interview availability for 2-3 months? Thankfully that other link was posted in here so I can just go to DC and walk-in.

If you are all on the same reservation you will all get pre-check.
At least it worked for me that way 2 months ago.
Had another non related family on my itinerary and they all had pre-check on their boarding passes (was really helpful at MCO).

you gotta pick a place that's farther away from big cities. i picked a place that was a 2 hours from the closest big city and the wait was 1 day instead of 2 months.

this was true for me when me, my wife, son and friend went on a trip in June. im the only one with prepass but they all go it. which was a godsend, the peasant line in Atlanta was horrendous. Prepass in Atlanta had 5 people in it.😀

yes but Pre-Check is a separate program from Global Entry. I've read that Global Entry doesnt get the rest of your family in while Pre-Check will. we'll see come Monday.
