So you guys are on 2 separate networks and both don't work? That is pretty odd. Make sure you have the latest version and try manually updating punk buster.
Yeah both of us have 1.41. We are able to play together now (I think EA 'fixed' the issue), its just that maybe 50% of the time one of us cant connect to the same server as the other...I did some research and apparently its an EA problem (go figure). I googl'ed my error messages and there are forums with people bitching about the same thing.
Be sure to look at the dates of those forums, etc. Honestly, just by reading your post, sounds like you have a network issue, not a BF2 issue. (despite all the negativity from users who probably never play the game anymore).
Personally, I have no issues with BF2/BF2:SF. I play it each night with no hick ups. If you're behind a router, check your ports. Google 'multiple computers playing BF2 on same network' (assuming you and your girl are playing on the same workgroup). Honestly, this is more network related, not so much software. BF2 has its CTD's, then again, what game doesn't. Also, it can be server related, there are a few servers out there that lagg and crash, be sure you find the good ones with good pings. I have plenty of favorites if you need some (if you're West Coast).
On a side note, BF2 is still a great game regardless of all the EA haters out there. Don't get me wrong, TF2 is great too, played it but kind of got bored with it (same ol). Where as BF2 there is a lot of various teamwork type of plays that occur. (I would play in 32 max Infantry Only servers) If you like Vehicles, also go for 32 Max. 64 is just rape from every corner and you can lose a lot of interest. But with you and your gf, it should be fun. You + any Real Life friend is ALWAYS a plus in this game. Cheers
