GNOME 1.4 has been out for ages.

GNOME 2.0 is currently in beta, and nowhere near imminent release. It's for developers to test and bang on right now.

KDE3 is in final release candidate, and will be out within a month or so.

I find it disappointing that both Mandrake and SuSE are going to be shipping non-final KDE3 in their latest distros, meaning that it'll likely take a geek to upgrade the bazillion packages.

That's what it's going to take for Linux to taken seriously in the desktop market.

WRONG!!! Well at least with SuSe you are very wrong. They are only taking orders for SuSe 8.0 and will only be shipping it latter this month when KDE 3.0 comes out. One of the reasons I know this is true is that SuSe provides a lot of help to the KDE team and they have a pretty good idea when KDE 3.0 will be out ( minus any major show stoping bugs mind you ) and they do have pretty good knowledge of the level of development going on with the KDE team from day to day. So when I recieve my copy of my pre-ordered version of 8.0 later this month I will have KDE 3.0 final as a desktop GUI choice with 8.0. :p

P.S. It doesn't take a geek to upgrade KDE or Gnome with SuSe when they provide rpms for you to download from their ftps and then all you have to do to install them is to use the command rpm -ivh * to install and then I run SuSEconfig to configure those rpms or Yast ( well hopefully it will be able to since Yast1 is being put to rest in this version sadly in favor of Yast 2 ) as well. I like to divide my rpms into three differrent directorys simular to the way SuSe has them setup when you download them which is directories base, applications, and languages and use the command I mentioned before or Yast to install going from directory to directory and am done.

No, my point is simply that it's not a good habit to ship non-final software.

NorthenLove,

I stand corrected with SuSE then. I had not seen any information clearly stating they'll hold the release until KDE3 is golden.

I use SuSE Linux as well, and I still argue that the way SuSE puts the RPMs up on their ftp server, a couple dozen packages split up into various directories makes the barrier to entry higher than it should be.

If you're not a geek, the best you can do is use yast2, or just install them *all* blindly. Unless they've made it a lot better in 8.0, yast2 online update is weak anyway.

Finally, SuSE doesn't just provide support to the KDE team; they actually employ quite a few of the developers.

That all depends on which netgear NIC you have :)
It all depends on the chipset your card uses, and I can't tell you if its going to work if I don't know what card you have.

Really I always found it easy to locate what I needed from their ftp's and the layout has never bothered me one bit as it allows me to download what I want. If I only need KDE or XFree86 packages then I just go to the directory that houses them and download them. Also I think Yast2 works great for what it was intended to do which is downloading bug and patch updates. The only thing it doesn't do is update your all packages to newer current versions which is what the ftp's are for if you want SuSe compiled rpm's of let's say mozilla.

NorthenLove,

I won't get into yast2 online update's weaknesses (unless you want me to).

But I'm referring to RPM's weakness vs. .deb in handling dependencies. rpm/yast2 don't resolve them for you automagically like apt-get does.

While I haven't used Debian in ages, it's a killer feature to have. I know Mandrake has developed something similar for RPM, but unless it's a widespread de facto standard, it's not going to help out users.

I think you did hint to a partial solution though; if they made yast2 online update better, and allowed you to upgrade more packages (i.e. mozilla or KDE), then the user experience would be improved.

Fetching a bunch of RPMs from an ftp site, is by definition a geek activity.

That's good to hear, but from what I saw on the SuSE website they are only shipping StarOffice 5.2 with SusE 8.0. All versions of Mandrake will at least come with a newer version of Open Office, and the higher priced ones come with StarOffice 6.0. Now I haven't tried it myself, but it looks good on paper anyway.
I guess it comes down to what you want more and it always seems to be a trade off with these distributions.

it's weird that they say it's shopping with Staroffice 6.0 when that isn't even out yet. I'd like to know the thinking there, unless it's being released in the next couple of weeks?

Two weeks ago I threw Mandrake 8.1 on my box and went with Gnome. It kept locking up and would never access webpages on my domain. I tried to get around it, but it would lock the system. I scrapped it. Then 8.2 came out last week. I installed it with KDE and everything went flawless. It works perfectly fine for me. I didn't keep it on though, as I only had about 1.5GB of free space, so I'm gonna get another drive so I can learn linux. I couldn't even get mnt to work.

Guess I need more space...it's a sad day when 200GB are full. Err, wait - it's a great day cause I can go get another drive!

All in all, for an out of the box working linux solution for n00bs, I think Mandrake 8.2 is great!

I have the FA311 running under Mandrake 8.2 without a flaw I have also had it working under RH 7.1!

I checked and the boxed versions haven't been released as of yet. They say they will start shipping around April 15th or at the latest April 30th. Hmmmm.......maybe they know something we don't know when it comes to Star Office's release date ? LoL - Maybe there's a conspricay going on here with Mandrake, SuSe, KDE and Sun ? Anyways only the stripped down version of 8.2 is available and you don't get any support for that since you didn't pay for it to begin with so maybe they are just watering peoples mouths right now so when the box versions come out people will know what to expect. Also Mandrake has started a new program were you can download the free ISO's and then pay to download the extra comrecial programs if you want that do not come with the free ISO's offered by Mandrake.

According to Mandrake's web site, SO 6.0 is final and can be downloaded if you're a Silver member of the Mandrake club (or whatever it's called), through an OEM license arrangement with Sun.
