Trump wants a 20% tariff on Mexico to pay for the Wall

Apparently a reporter asked Spice how is making things more expensive for Americans the same as having Mexico pay for wall. Spicer didn't answer.

I keep hearing how this cost will be past on to Americans, which yeah is probably going to happen. But won't products not made in Mexico be able to undercut them? How about you buy more Coors and less Corona since it will be cheaper anyways. You are not forced to buy products made in Mexico, you know.

In short, no. Supply chains would take years to alter even if it still wasn't cheaper to still import from Mexico even with the tax (which it probably wouldn't be). It's coming out of US pockets one way or another.

I think Trump is trolling Mexico for negotiating purposes. And you guys are taking the bait even though it's not aimed at you. I suspect that just gives Trump additional satisfaction.

If you guys keep this up your panties will soon be so bunched up you'll never get the wrinkles out.

Those countries don't have the production abilities currently in place for the fruits and vegetables trades. Mexico has perfected the production logistics and export. It's not an easy model to replace

So America will just have to adjust then. If sandorski can't go buy his lime as easy as before, well the world isn't going to end.

I wonder if it would make Produce cheaper for us Canadians though? Mexico would have a lot of Supply.

He threw a temper tantrum in front of the whole world and yet again showed us he has no idea what he's doing.

I don't see how supply chains would need to be altered for products made in America, which I will be buying as much as possible.

Insulting another country is usually not a good negotiating tactic.

Because domestic supply is finite. When the avocado/lime supply in MX/latin america decreased, prices for avocados and limes skyrocketed (cuz you know, same demand + lower supply = higher price).

Products made in the US very often (if not always) have components that are made elsewhere. This is particularly true for heavy manufacturing and the auto industry.

First, the word "usually" and Trump don't belong together.

Second, it's not an insult; it's more of a threat (or Trump's counter to their "no" re: the wall). I think Mexico will have to think long and hard before calling this 'bluff'.

Some people are responding to Trump's election by freaking out. When he was elected I knew my response was going to be pulling up a lounge chair and grabbing a really, really big bucket of popcorn.

Oh.

Is a trade war going to limit products available to Americans, and/or raise prices of those products?
How is that a positive thing?

oh so you knew he would break everything and still voted for him. cool. Now we know who to blame.

Looking at the Google news page it seems that the Administration has walked this back, for the time being at least.

Trump can float as many ideas as he wants, just don't bet on them. Most of his words will not materialize.

What do you call Trump's comments about Mexicans? Endearing?

He was elected to a role that has a lot of strings. Things happen when he does something. And Twitter diplomacy is not a thing.

I am not saying you don't have a point, but I would be interested to see an actual percentage of American companies that rely on products from Mexico. It's a valid concern, no doubt. But then those companies also have a choice to contract with an American company to produce those goods as well - and if I have to pay more because it costs more to deal with an American company than I am fine with that.

Why isn't Trump protecting the horse and buggy manufacturers from the evil auto industry?

At the end of the day, economics isn't a zero sum game. Mexico and the US both win because of increased trade between our countries.
