Trump want to open Tyson meat plant in Waterloo IA that caused 90% of the town's COVID-19 cases

Trump wouldn't mind killing most of the people in this town just to keep the plant open. During this entire pandemic people's lives have taken a back seat to the economy just to help his re-election.

But isn't this just reflective of the (current) conservative philosophy of "No matter the cost in lives, the economy comes first, dammit!" (As long as they're safe, btw.)

I'm a little surprised that this isn't a lot more common. Food production is critical, and most facility's are designed to make the maximum use of available space, which equals close proximity for the people working there. Obviously they can't be shut down, so the only logical step is protecting the employees. Seems like it should be doable. It also seems like these folks should be near the top of the list for testing.

Yes, PPE and testing should be heaped upon these folks.

Paid sick leave for them & working family members who quarantine with them. Cash bonuses. Strong survivor benefits. Temperature checks at shift change & breaks. Contact tracing. Permanent residency status for any lacking it. Whatever it takes. The food supply must be maintained. We can pretty much depend on the Trump admin to half-ass the whole thing.

Why the Hell isn't there more testing? What grand fuckup underlies the reasons for that?

Start at the top. The person who could legally require manufacturing of PPE and reagents for use in test kits, the person who has the legal resources - both monetarily and administratively, to coordinate and deploy testing on a national level.
When that person is a complete fuckup, the results follow accordingly

I too, am tired of winning so much.

Everything you listed is reactionary. Start a step further back, give everyone at the facility's a physical and remove everyone with an existing morbidity. Obesity, diabetes, CPOD, asthma, TMB, heart condition, anything that puts them at higher risk. That will reduce the risk of death to near zero for those that are infected. At that point all that's required is masks, disinfectant, and a little education.

I actually think this is a somewhat legitimate application of the DPA. Food infrastructure is vital, and centralized into a relatively small number of plants. They really do need to be kept operating. That said, they need to be required to issue PPE, have stringent testing and health care, sick time off, etc.

It makes a lot more sense than opening up bars, restaurants, bowling alleys, tattoo parlors, etc.

Agreed.
But using the DPA to enforce the former without the latter is criminally incompetent

You will be left with not enough people to run said plant.

What about the workers families? You know they spend most of their time at home.

This is Iowa. If you did that you would remove 99% of the plant's employees.

Imagine supermarkets w/o meat for months on end. It would collapse the supply chains all the way down to feed suppliers.

Once the sick people from the plant recover, they'll (hopefully) be immune from reinfection. Odds are that most of the people in the plant have been exposed at this point, and you're getting close to herd immunity in that plant. Of course, we won't know for certain until they test them all.

They're the only people in the country ordered back to work by the govt & who will lose UI benefits if they don't go. That puts them at the top of our priorities along with healthcare workers. We owe these people, make no mistake about it. We need to do right by them for it to work at all.

What is wrong with you to claim COVID-19 "killing most of the people"?
NYC mortality rate is 1%.
And without food, a hell of lot more of us would die.

actually we can, meat is not necessary for survival.

First, we eat a hell of a lot of it.
Second, losing it means increased demand for other foods. Supply that won't exist over night. Or even next month.
No matter how you slice it, less food means hungry people.

This is America, those hungry people have guns. Now after adding that up, guess what will follow.

So the solution is to shut down all food processing? does something make you think that would be better than the pandemic?

That's not what he said. He said following your recommendation may not leave enough people to run the plant. It means we need to strongly incentivize people to step up & take those empty jobs no matter how vacancies are created.

So it all comes down to keeping the supply of meat to the nation an ongoing operation while still actually making a profit even with the proper safety restrictions in place.

Guess what side of that equation will get chopped to pieces in no time flat?
