I've found that Trump supporters like to mumble about republic when you talk about the popular vote and casually mention that the majority of American's vote the "fuck republicans" ticket.
I've yet to find one who can actually describe what a Republic actually is.

Understood. It’s also like when you study civilization and realize that religion was the first way to control the masses. Seems that this goes hand in hand with their overall message. That being said as others have mentioned the idea that whatever is currently in the constitution is the good/right way to do things seems pretty blind to the fact that the electoral college in particular was created in significant part to protect slavery by using the 3/5ths compromise.
