Trump team considers nationalizing 5G network

All this coming on the night before Christmas when Trump will announce he's become a liberal democrat and becomes the greatest president ever. He's even going to insist on the teaching of evolution.

Bwahahahaha! Now see, as an actual free market conservative I oppose the nationalization of any industry. But to Trump supporters, I'm a fscking liberal.

What the actual, literal fsck.

Good gawd I've been telling them they've been brainwashed into accepting fascism/totalitarianism by their media. And lookie here.

Apparently, free market classical liberalism is now liberal and nationalizing industry is now conservative.

This just doesn't make sense to me. Why would trump support this?

The cynic in me says the goal is to get government to build out the network and then sell it to telecoms. That sounds great but it means we would probably take a huge loss on the deal and he telcos would gain bigly!

I'd say doubtful it happens, but knowing these Republican ass clowns, we'll somehow pay for the buildout and then we'll pay the major telecoms to be given exclusive rights to "manage" it. And then we'll probably have Pence talking about putting "decency" filters for porn and anything they don't like.

Nationalizing generally refers to seizing already existing assets. This story refers to the idea of the government building a new national 5G network as public infrastructure. Still a worthy debate to have whether the government should do such a thing but a more accurate description.

5G is effectively just spectrum licenses...which the government has already made available for licensing to private companies. So it literally would involve the government taking back spectrum (that some companies already paid licenses for, by the way) and/or no longer licensing it for private use.

It also applies in the sense that the government has been relinquishing most communications networks to private companies for decades, so this would mark them changing that.

Either way, nationalization is an entirely accurate description.

I am interested.

I'm gonna get whiplash between needing to love gov regulation re "Net neutrality" but needing to hate nationalized infrastructure re 5G.

One of the signature moves of highly-placed conservatives is getting the gub'mint to spend money and time on research and development, and then having said gub'mint sell off what should be the public commons to corporations who then charge rents on what was paid for by the people.

Look beyond next week, and this shouldn't surprise anyone.

And China will pay for it.
I thought it was Mexico....😛

Didn't they just change the rules so telecoms don't have to maintain their infrastructure anymore?

Because trump is a nationalist. Im shocked this hasnt come out sooner. We get to see how govt run internet actually works in practice vs theory if Drumpf gets his way. Think of it like our highway system, and how well that is maintained.

Can't wait to see all the anti-NN folks suddenly in favor of federalizing internet.

Step 1 - Build it with tax dollars
Step 2 - Rent it to providers
Step 3 - Start complaining about "Big government" and hand off responsibilities to providers
Step 4 - Hand the whole thing over to private industry for a fraction of the cost of what private industry would build it for.
Step 5 - Back to square one when private industry moves on to another tech. Restart NN debate. Complain about old uncompetitive 5g network that chinesse conglomerates bought up at firesale prices.
Step 6 - Begin investigation into Hillary's involvement in 5g network scandal.
