They were born there. The family has been in Mexico for decades after splitting off from the LDS church as they wanted to continue polygamy. The family is armed to the teeth having imported guns illegally from the U.S., has had run-ins with cartels for years, runs its own armed patrols, pretty much owns the town, and has been alleged to kidnap "brides".
That makes why Fox News is all over this more understandable.

I need to look into this more (have any good links?), but the moment I heard it was Mormons, I knew there was a lot more to this than was initially mentioned.
