If I'm not mistaken...Trump can't run as an independent. All republicans signed a pledge not to do so.
“I [name] affirm that if I do not win the 2016 Republican nomination for president of the United States I will endorse the 2016 Republican presidential nominee regardless of who it is. I further pledge that I will not seek to run as an independent or write-in candidate nor will I seek or accept the nomination for president of any other party."
So...every one of the Republican candidates signed a pledge that they would endorse Donald Trump if he were to win the primary, so I fully expect all of them to support his campaign in the general, should Republican voters choose Trump. Perhaps future candidates should think long and hard about blindly signing their names to such a document.
Reince Priebus probably won't have a job after this is all over. Forcing every Republican to potentially have to endorse Donald Trump for President is nuts for putting them in such a bad situation.

But campaign-law scholars said he would not invite any legal blowback should he change his mind.
“I don’t think there are any legal consequences,” University of California, Irvine law professor Rick Hasen told the Guardian after reviewing the Republican party’s pledge. “It’s hard to see this as an enforceable contract.”
