Because Republicans wouldn't have it and it may not be Constitutional. But that doesn't keep Trump from fomenting insurrection in the name of "taking back freedom" in Michigan and elsewhere. Trump is facing a defamation suit and he's hired Barr and the DOJ to defend him at taxpayer expense. What law entitles him to that? Personal defense attornies, the DOJ? Trump gives f all about right or wrong or limits. What Trump could have done is not lie and get supplies out instead of insisting this is no big deal.

You omit at the same time Trump knew how deadly this virus was he was planning large indoor rallies and not requiring masks. Does that sound like the actions of a President with the people's welfare as a priority? Wasn't he putting his own people in harm's way?

What does tell you?

No it does not, but at what point in Trump’s entire political career had he ever indicated that people’s welfare was a priority to him? I recognize we expect that of a President, but Trump quite transparently ran as someone who is not Presidential, not has he ever made an attempt to act as such. The pandemic gave Trump an opportunity to rise and change the narrative of his entire legacy, and he failed.

I'm sure most of Trumps advisors thought the interviews were a bad idea, but Trump insisted. He wanted to do it because an interview by Woodward is something that all recent presidents have done and it proves that you are the real deal and a way to convey his greatness. Sort of like getting your face on the cover of Time. Also he thought he could bullshit/charm Woodward just like he did tabloid journalists back when he was a "big player" in New York.

Fauci recognizes if he counters Trump, he is fired. He also recognizes that if he is fired, his ability to have any control or say in how the country handles the virus is over. He knows that he will be replace by a Trump stooge, perhaps the 'demon sperm' doctor.

Fauci didn't survive in his position through 6 presidents without being somewhat political and he is generally fairly subtle. This is why I have a trust but verify approach with Fauci on anything he says about the vaccines, so far I don't think he's lied but, again, you don't stay in that position for that long without being at least somewhat political.

And never has he been more tested than walking the Trump tightrope of mental illness and fragile ego.

They’re already saying that Trump just didn’t want people to panic, so it’s nothingburger.

They assume we won’t recall that Trump has worked hard to create panic: about “caravans;” about “MS-13;” about ‘socialists and anarchists taking over;’ about ‘plane-loads of antifa thugs’ flying around and brandishing weapons.

Creating panic is Trump’s signature move. Something he likes to do.

Of course the smoking gun would have been Trump being explicit about where he wanted to avoid panic: on Wall Street. Because Trump is convinced that so long as the stock market is doing well, his re-election is in the bag.

I have no doubt that Trump’s base will believe he was telling the complete truth when he said that Covid19 was no danger. And they will believe he was also telling the complete truth when he said that Covid19 IS a serious danger. It’s a form of victim-blaming. “The president lied to you because you’re a bunch of hysterical crybabies who can’t handle the truth. Stop crying about it, you hysterical crybaby!”
