True cost of console ownership

yah I thought this was pretty common knowledge.

but the thing is, you don't HAVE to get all of those so the price actually flucutates dramatically.

that was interesting to read, and it was something I tried to hammer into my friends heads when I hear them say a certain console is cheaper.

for the 360, why only 2 rechargeable batteries when they said they have 4 controllers? add another $24

I have many friends with the PS3 and never have I seen any of them with a charging station. Any of you guys have that? I personally don't.

I got the wireless for my 360, and after taking a step back, I'm thought, damn, this is an expensive console!

Anyways, skew the numbers anyway you want, and have the fanboys come running, LOL

They already include a recharging station with two rechargeable batteries for $30.

Its all about options. You can make any list you want, but ill bet 99% of the people who look at those lists have a different idea on how they should be configured.

Because of this, it seems like the sales model where you have a low(er) cost basic model and optional features is better recieved than one of adding all of the features on box with a higher pricetag.

In the end, if it all costs the same anyway, who wouldnt want the power to choose options they want as well as having the ability to spread the cost out over a period of time.

A few notes about what I think could be modified:

1. PS3 doesn't really need charging stations for controllers.
2. The average consumer likely won't know what the motion plus is, and likely won't pick it up unless a game requires it.
3. WiFi for the 360 is mentioned at the end, though I don't see why they'll try to compare the features and costs as much as possible without adding it in to the total numbers.
4. If we were talking long-term, you'd have to keep adding the cost of Live on yearly (which would add up).
5. It's too bad HD-DVD is dead, otherwise you'd have another thing to add on to the 360's cost if you REALLY wanted to match it up with the PS3. There's no real way to factor that in with this, really (the PS3 having Blu-Ray, that is).

Overall, though, this is the same idea I've had for a while and used when people complained about the PS3's cost. They're pretty similar. One console sucks your wallet dry in itself while the others do that via accessories and other extra fees.

I have 5. Its called "having friends".

My friends are online. Physical friends are overrated. And who the hell buys charging station for PS3 controllers? Just plug it into the PS3 USB ports!

pfft, friends are overrated, period.

I'd rather use that 129$ to buy two more games 😛

Never mind the fact that if your 360 isnt located near your router, and you want to go Wifi, thats an extra $100 if you buy the MS adapter. Or that the PS3 controllers dont need a recharging dock, or batteries. You can simply plug them into the PS3 with the supplied cable, or any other USB connector, such as a laptop, desktop, or USB outlet.

Wii has the most expensive controller seeing as you basically need a Wiimote and Nunchuck so that's $60
Wii Motion pluses are not a needed accessory
No one buys a recharge station for the PS3 and you don't need them for any system
You don't need an HDMI cable either

Well these specs definitly depend on the customer. Personally i think they should considered Wifi and HDMI cable for 360, Ethernet adapter and component cables for the Wii to be comparable all around. On the other side, i'd say take out Live membership to be even cheaper, since its not necessary to play a local multiplayer game.

Why do you need a charging station for the PS3? Why no HDMI cable and extended warranty for the Xbox 360?

I think Yreka hit it, comparison is somewhat useless as everyone will pick different things, as you can see by this thread alone

I myself get my 360 bundle with the 2 controllers with a PNC kit, so that cuts a controller and rechargeable battery from the purchases

No charging station for the Ps3
Only batteries for the 360
Wireless adapter for the 360

360 should then end up a bit more
Ps3 should be closer to the Wii

They should do game bundles instead of separate games.

Most people have real friends, it's just that nobody can stand your hippie stank.

It almost a fair comparison, but I'm not sure if I would call that "true cost of console ownership," at least not for me.

4 controllers? 4-player split-screen FTL; 360 is compatible with computer monitors, its better to just set up a LAN for same-room multiplayer with friends.

$15-$20 gets me at least 4 rechargeable AA batteries with charger. Maybe better, but unfortunately I always seem to miss out on those Enelope deals.

Ack, $60 for a game. My view on the pricing on games has been skewed too much by PC game prices. Dawn of War 2 for $24 a couple weeks after its launch, and then there is Steam with its weekend deals. I spent $50 on SSBB and Twilight Princess and regret it. I stick to $30 or less, unless its some sort of insanely awesome game, which is very rare.

well, most of my friends that would play 360 with me have their own 360.

if we get together to play in the same house, it's a BYOC night.

There are plenty of games that you can play without 4-player split screen. I've got two kids, so two kids + me equals at least three controllers. Four controllers for when we have friends over.

I rarely buy new anymore. I wait for a sale or buy used.

That's the big one for me. My PS3 is essentially a blu-ray player that I get to game on from time to time. Sets it way apart.
