The funny part about all this is that it won't even affect developers that much. They are busy, you know, coding and making assets instead of trolling twitter or sending death threats. If anything maybe they may do a double take in the creative department when someone wants to put leather tights on a female character: "Uhm, maybe they should be a bit looser?" 😛 So insignificant.

And then, the marketing department responds with "no, they stay tight because we want to, you know, sell copies."

The problem with crying about the tropes of sexualized women in games is that these women exist and push themselves to the spotlight in real life. Do you think someone crafted Kim Kardashian's image like that? No, she did it herself. How about female artists in the music industry? You think they are forced into that image? Unlikely.

It is the same in movies. Name a movie where the lead female is a frumpy, ugly, unsexual women? Yeah, it isn't a movie that people actually saw.

Everything that that cow Melissa McCarthy stars in. She's not funny, she's frumpy, ugly and unsexual. She hits big with similar women.

I get and agree with what you're saying but a lot of the female artists in music are pushed heavily into their images regardless if they are comfortable or not. It's an entire team that makes that image not just the artist herself. It's only way down the line when the artist is the name can they extend much control over their image. Even then they can only go so far without risking losing both the fanbase and their backing.

On the topic itself.. this whole thing reminds me how little of a pond gaming and comics are. There are a lot more of these... feminists pointing out misogyny (I'm really struggling to title wtf this whole thing is without it coming across as an insult. I don't intend it to be an insult, people are allowed to think and voice that thought no matter how stupid I may think it is) on movies, music and TVs. The difference is no one outside of those looking for it really cares. The whole 'controversy' in both games and comics is driven by sites needing gossip to make people read/watch/click links their crap. The gossip side of the other entertainment products have a completely different approach to gossip that works for them. Games and comics sadly don't have that kind as no one really cares who made the games/books (for the most part) let alone who they're sleeping with. Sadly this whole thing has shown that people are interested in manufactured controversy as we wouldn't have all these articles on the subject if people weren't reading them. The worst part, from what I've seen, is people have only reinforced the idea that they want this kind of gossip crap and now there's going to be even more popping up. Wait until more of the Sarkeesian/Quinn knock offs get going. You won't be able to find a review site without tripping on this crap.

Huh. I had no idea that she was in movies. It looks like I've only seen 1 of them. I'll try to keep it that way, having seen her in King of Queens.

I was gonna say Misery, and Fat Girl; and Fat Girl just because Misery is the only major movie I can think of.

Gaming is a huge sea, not a pond (I can't comment on comics as I don't know anything about them). The small pond here is section of gaming journalism, which has been taken over by a radical feminist ideology (as defined by wikipedia) to the chagrin of their audience, which is most definitely NOT radical feminist. You're confusing the small group of people who write these articles with the industry at large (developers, tons more journalists, and consumers).

I think she's hilarious in Mike and Molly, but yeah, her movies are awful. I think she was also great in Samantha Who. As far as being "frumpy, ugly and unsexual", I disagree; she's simply very fat. If one likes fat, I'd think one would find her attractive enough.

I'd think its more likely these are dumb teen boys, the same ones that swat people. Still would be creepy to get that kind of stuff on your twitter out of the blue. I think that lady is married with a child, so I doubt she's got too much time to set up a hoax. I've heard stranger things though.
 
There's no shortage of fucksticks on the internet that would do this kind of thing. I don't know why these victims feel the need to rebroadcast it. It just encourages future harassers more and provides them with gratification. I guess pushing the misogyny narrative is worth it tho.

I lean towards believing these women as everyone that's ever created something has received death threats. I was dating a psychology major who had a anonymous survey over smoking. There were a few rape and death threats in the "other comments" section. I'm still not sure why as the people filling it out hadn't a clue who or what was reading the responses. It's odd that there is a formula now for this harassment.

Step 1. Be a woman and poke at the gamer/comic community by stating that there's something wrong with the way that communities' product relates to women.
Step 2. Claim a internet group (Never heard of 8chan before today, or wizardchan until reading about Quinn) is posting threats with home info.
Step 3. Make sure everyone on the internet knows this is happening.
Step 4. The battles between everyone continues with both sides claiming victim.

At the end of it all, I can't help but feel bad for the women.. if they did get the threats, that's some fucked up shit. No one should ever feel unsafe because of an opinion.. we're not some fucked up third world. If they faked it I feel bad as they're that low they're grasping at whatever they can to get attention..

If you're in the public spotlight, you WILL occasionally get the attention of some jerks who will say bullshit just to get a rise out of people. Sarky and her ilk just know how to milk this known phenomenon for all it's worth.

My point is that if you believe it is a credible threat you should report it to law enforcement and not rebroadcast the threats to thousands of people verbatim, including the harassers name, and stating that your so scared you had to go seek refuge someplace safe. Congratulations, you just gave the harasser a platform for attention far larger than what he had, provided him with the gratification of knowing his threats are read by thousands, and provided him with the gratification of knowing he caused you to fear for your safety. If you don't believe it is a credible threat, then rebroadcasting it is simply feeding the trolls.

IF it's a real threat, there is a victim. Death and rape threats shouldn't be dismissed. They really should never be dismissed if they include detailed personal information like has been reported in this case. I'm not a fan of going so public with it as it only fuels the fire of a lot of idiots.

I really agree with this. Taking stuff like this public only asks for more of it. Most of the stuff I've seen about stalkers has all said to not provoke them. In all of these cases, these women are really poking that bear. Granted it's not like they're engaging them directly but they are still giving them attention while putting it out there for people to rally behind. It's the one part that's really causing any doubt in my head about the honesty of this stuff. I lean towards all this being true in both cases as I've seen enough of this crap to believe it could easily be true. I just really wish the victims of this stuff (in all the cases I've read) didn't gain so much from it. It just tarnishes everything in that doubt. As I'd never play (at least I don't believe I would based upon what I've seen on the games) the stuff they're putting out there I couldn't say one way or the other if they needed the boost they're getting from these situations.

Her behavior surrounding all this really strikes me as being opportunistic more than anything else. Any publicity is good publicity, right?

(I'm not so biased that I don't see how leading Milo's questions are, but there are still certain facts presented about her behavior to be gleaned from the attempted interview that really show her to be an opportunist/profiteer. If it quacks like a duck...)
