Trip to Philippines

I am planning a trip to the Philippines from mid July to mid August of this year. I was wondering if any of you knew about visa requirements (since I'm staying for a month), vaccination requirements (I've been there before and had to get vaccinated), cheapest airfare, and other random stuff. I've done the research as well but I keep getting conflicting reports. I heard Hawaiian Air is the cheapest as I will be going from Sacramento to Manila. Any help would be appreciated.

Updated: Any places I should be going in Luzon in particular? Where do I go shopping? How much should I bring (I'm staying with Family)?

Update: What are your experiences in using either Philippine Airline or Hawaiian Airline?

It takes almost 65 days to get your passport. Do it NOW. Also, start looking for fares now, as the longer you wait, the more you have to pay.

gl, hf. I haven't been to the P.I. in over 25 years, but it was a blast when I was there.

So I wouldn't need to get a visa then from the Philippine embassy? The officials at the airport could give me more than the 21 days, since I am going to stay there for a month.

I don't think I need vaccinations since there is no case of yellow fever here in California...right?

uh, no, you get vaccination so you dont contract it once youre there, because if you do you may spread it there (via mosquito as vector)

According to their website, you need a visa for stays over 21 days. Looks like the airport officials can grant you entry for 21-days or longer up to their discretion, then you can apply for a 38-day visa waiver after entry, but they could also deny you entry altogether since your return ticket is more than 21-days after entry and you officially need a visa for stays over 21-days. I would just apply for the visa to be safe.

This is the recommendations for vaccines from the CDC:

generally you don't NEED anything if you aren't visiting rural areas, but Hep A is a good idea.

What is considered rural? Places besides Manila, Quezon City, or Cebu?

I think I will have to get that visa just to be safe.

Have fun while you're out there it is extremely hawt and very humid over there. Prior to 2005 when I last visited, I was there in 88. All I could remember was how friggin' hot it was. The family that we were staying with didn't have AC in their house and the only place that did was in certain taxi's. Most of the long distance traveling we did was done via a converted tour bus, to a jeepney, and finally to a tricycle.

Lots of culture shock while I was out there. What I found that was pretty funny is if you eat at McDonald's, your combo comes with a ball of rice. Plus if you visit any of the Mall's, their guards all have automatic rifles......even at the fast food joints. While driving, don't be surprised if you see people riding on the roofs of vehicles either. If you like drinking San Miguel is like Budweiser over there. A bottle of beer is around 35 pesos and $1 USD = 50 pesos. 😀

Yeah I've heard all about the heat. I know I really don't know what to expect, but hopefully I won't be too shocked by it. I am staying in a couple places that have air conditioning and it will be my 2nd time there (Went in February 98).

I'm not staying in Manila. The only times I'm actually going to be in Manila is when I get off the plane and when I get on the plane.

I'm going there for Christmas through New Years. We'll be staying in Manila for the first week then in Siquijor for the last week. My sister didn't say anything about an vaccinations but just in case, I'll get vaccinated before I leave.

Be sure to get vaccinated for the swine flu, tb, bends, and Swahili brain rot.

I was in the Philippines last February for three weeks. I didn't need a visa or any vaccinations. I've never needed any vaccinations for a visa.

My girlfriend is going to the Philippines in June and she didn't need any vaccinations as far as I know. Then again, she's also a nurse so she gets vaccinated for everything all the time, so it's possible she had already gotten anything that might be required.
