Wow a whiny bunch are we not? I'm glad I donated $5 back in the day. Heck I dont even use trillian now, but now i just might :) Personally, I wouldnt pay $25 for the pro version while there is still a free version, I'd agree with the majority saying 1/2 the price is more adequate. At approx $15, it'd be an affordable solution to its userbase of millions of people. Even at that cheap, the quantity moved would be very high.

I'm also dissapointed in the price; $25 is almost half the cost of UT2K3, a AAA video game that's spent years in development. $10 I would do, it's fair for the features(note to Trillian: $10 for Pro minus the tech support, I don't have faith in software tech support), but $25 for a year of it is simply too much for some features I'd like, but many I'd never use

And I suppose Trillian was developed overnite? First time I've heard about it was over 2 years ago. And I thought it was $25 for the software. If you dont want the $25 version, use the free one. I'm sure updates will come, but not as often as the commercial one.

I donated $10 about 6 months ago and so I get this free upgrade to Pro. And I must say I'm not all that thrilled. It seems that Trillian is headed the way of ICQ--way too many features that I'll never use. I don't want stock quotes or mp3 players or 8 bajillion options that I'll never use. I just want to be able to chat. So I'm not sure I want Pro--although .74 should be a worthwhile upgrade. Further, I'm wondering if they're gonna get themselves in trouble by essentialy charging for access to AOL's AIM service (or any of the other ones). It will be interesting to see if AOL comes down on them. What good is their Pro version if AOL blocks them AGAIN? We won't be any better off, will we?

I like Trillian, I really do, but their continued reliance of the big players' networks is still a concern to me, especially now that they're charging $$.

I'm sure they've thought about the issue with charging for software to access these networks and I'd have some faith that they've worked something out.

One thing I've found with Trillian is that the developers don't seem all that dumb. :p

then don't install the plugins for those things

the thing I like about trillian is it can be real simple and it also can be really customized and filled with features

But then what's the point of having all these super plugins if I have no need? That's my point--Pro does nothing for me. .74 is what I want--I don't need all that other stuff. So yeah, even though I can get Pro for free doesn't even mean that I necessarily want it, or would want to support that version.

As for the developers not being dumb--I totally agree--but that still doesn't mean AOL can't turn around pull some legal sh*t out of their butt and drag Trillian all over court. Corporations are greedy. ;)

$25 is way too much for an instant messenger

especially one that doesn't even have its own network and just leeches off others

neomits, good idea! haha

deftron, glad to see someone else agrees on this point. In fact, it was the Trillian/AOL thing this spring that spawned the BitWise Chat program you see advertised in my profile--we use our own network instead of relying on something else to work right. ;)

stev0, there is still a free version, with the same functionality is before. The NEW features require the $$.

i realize there is still a free verison, infact i'm using it as we speak... or type... what i was trying to say is what is the reasoning behind paying for trillian pro ?

The reason behind PRO is so that they get enough money to survive as a company and can continue to provide regular Trillian. ;)

They offered Trillian Pro to me for free because of my donation. :D

Pretty sweet.

Free for a year. I'm guessing that means we'll have to pony up $25 to continue to get updates after the year is up. I haven't seen whether it's $25 a year or it's just free for the first year to those of us who have donated.

It's $25 per year. When I signed up with the code they gave me b/c I had donated in the past, it expires in a year, and I'll have to renew. So it is something that requires renewal.

Note that the $25 is for support and upgrades; you can keep the program after your time is up; they're using a modified razor/blade system.

i would pay for trillian so i can have my html profiles :) that's about the only feature i was really waiting for... and i can't even test it out to see how it works on my system. but the high cost has steered me away.. i may buy ultramon instead .. it's a little more useful as i really only use AIM. that and the whole AOL shuttin down 3rd party access.. i'd hate to pay only to have it shot down.

Some things are worth paying for... not necessarily Trillian... but I have *shock*paid for some software before that is super-good. ;)

i'm not too impressed w/ the minibrowser.. but it is the first edition of it. i will continue using .74 for now. the profile thing i mentioned earlier is still present tho. i didn't see the pro version long enough to really test it.

I still don't think HTML is allowed in the profiles for AIM in Trillian Pro... oh well.
