Usually "paperwork" means that they want to run your credit. If they let anyone with a driver's license come in a drive their high performance vehicles, than everyone would be down there doing that.

correct,the smart dealers will also ask to make a photocopy of;

1, a Valid drivers license
2 a valid registration,for a vehicle You own;and drove to the dealership
3 a valid insurance card for the vehicle you own,and drove to the dealership.
4 a major credit card;

and they will call, and get a credit report, and also run you thru DMV,to see if you have lost your
driving privalages,or have gotten a bunch of tickets,etc..

If i ran a used,o new car lot, thats what i would do to weed out the "joyriders"

if you go and want to trade in a car worth $15-20,000 and test drive a car thats $30,000 then that
might be a little more likely to occur.

🙂

I had no trouble test driving a vehicle at the Lexus Dealership, they just told me to hold on let me get the plates, tossed me the keys.
The dealer was sitting next to me. I went in a polo shirt + cargo shorts and fliflops.

how old are you and where do you live? Also wahts your ethnic background? those factor in quite a bit. Atleast over here. You put a brown guy in a Lexus dealer, garaunteed they won't let you test drive anything easily. Hell even some salesman at Nissan are snobs. "Instead of a Maxima, how about a Sentra? Its more affordable for someone like you." Fscker.

Its cause your Oriental man. You guys are born with the monay!! 😀 😀 If you were a brown guy (which are common in NJ) walking into that Lexus dealer, you'd get the cold shoulder. Sad but true. Your 22?? How the hell do you afford a IS300? What field are you in? I'm swtiching over!

So when are we going to the beach? 😀

I only put $500 down. 3.5% APR for 5 years.
Had a Cosigner so I get the good rate.
I'm going to the poor house 🙂
But Not quite there yet

A related question. How does one go about test driving high end exotic cars?

I don't think you get a chance to test drive exotic cars unless you put down a deposit...

Cobras aren't really exotic, I think the main problem here is that he just went up and was like lemme drive your cobras. They can't very well let any punk who walks in off the street test drive their cars the would either a) kill the cars or b) steal it.

It's a Cobra... and it doesn't suck. 😀

leave it to ford to give a "snake" trim name to a "horse" model name

Leave it to fanboys (or anti-fan boys) to say something that really makes no sense.

Well, imho it all comes down to appearance, not necessarily credit etc. I have never had a dealership check my credit even when test driving expensive cars. I am also a little older than some of you guys (30's) and I think my clean cut appearance makes a difference. I was in a dealership a few months ago looking at some cars and they had a sweet looking new Escalade. I asked to take it for a drive and the older salesman throws me the keys and says have fun. No DL, no credit check, not even my name.....

Enthusiasts.....of what? A 93 RX7 does not compare to a 2003-4 Cobra....sorry.

You clearly make sound financial decisions. Would you please manage my money for me? I can't seem to throw it away fast enough.

I can't believe that this thread has gone on this long without a Ford salesman chip in! I had a friend who used to work at a Ford dealership. It was Policy for the last part of a Mustang Cobra deal to be the test drive. Mustang GT is no problem. Mustang Cobra, you do paperwork first test-drive later. That's just how it is.
BTW a car that is a decade old and didn't cost big$ new doesn't count for much.

Nah, your sarcasm meter is broken. 🙂 But even though his bank account is depleting and he has to take out a loan for school for the first time, he still thinks it was wise to buy a brand new Lexus as a college student who still has graduate school ahead of him. To each his own I guess.

Screw saving for the future, living for the moment and buying things we can't afford is the American way, damn it!

Actually it was depleting cuz I wasn't working 🙁 😀
I am currently working tho. I have about 800 rolling in tomorrow. I can make enough to pay for my car and pay my loan off. I do spend money on things I don't need but I'm not the type that'll put myself in a position to file bankruptcy or such.

If I know it's out of my limits then I wouldn't have gotten it.

For test driving cars, you need two things. You must be generally respectable and you must be in the position to buy. A couple years ago my dad decided he wanted to buy an Olds Aurora. The car was about 30~35K. We drove up in his '96 Mercury Grand Marquis (not a real high end car). He talked to the salesman for a while. Then he went to test drive it. The saleman even let me drive it (I was only 15 at the time).

I think this is a time for the 3 C's. Confidence. Class. Colateral🙂

EDIT: BTW, we left the lot with the new car.

I think, like a lot of other people do in this thread, that the salesperson made the valid assumption that you were there just to do a joyride. Because let's be brutally honest here. I have a gut feeling your age falls somewhere in the range of 18-21. The only way YOU would be purchasing a Cobra is if your parents purchased it for you or you won the lottery. Salespeople are trained, or at least learn, how to spot an actual potential buyer of a car as opposed to a joyrider. It would've been a waste of his time to do a test drive with you in a car that you were very unlikely to purchase and time does VERY much equal money for these folks. Personally when I was looking at cars last year I went to a Nissan dealership to take a look at the 2003 Nissan Altima 3.5 SEs. I actually was able to do a test drive in one, granted they aren't quite as expensive as a Cobra but they aren't cheap either, without any hassle. Ended up purchasing another vehicle since the payments I would've had to do on it would've put a painful crimp on my budget. But I think the main reason I was able to do a test drive so easily is because I actually expressed an interest, and looked like I could afford the car. That is VERY much key.

If you had bought a less expensive car, you'd be saving money for retirement right now, not saving for a car payment. I stand by my opinion that you made a poor financial choice given your current situation. Enjoy your car.

I am still caught up with the fact that he was with his friend in a RX-7, which is not as cool as a car as he is trying to make it out to be. Especially compared to a brand spanking new Cobra.

Whatever dude.

Well I would say the Majority of the 18-21 are joy riding, but there are prolly a number of their parents that are willing to pay for it.
Remember the guy who was complaining about a SRT ? whatever that thing is called.

Also there are a small percentage of younger people whether they be drug dealers and what not that can purchase it.
Hell how old is Anand ?
Just assuming that the younger person is gonna joy ride is pretty messed up i think. Atleast treat them like they are a customer instead of pulling some bs.

Well like you said, the majority of the 18-21 crowd are out there joyriding. Sure if I was a nice guy I MIGHT let you do a joyride if I was the salesperson but it would be pretty short. He would've had a better chance had he pulled up with an adult that looked like they had the money to spend for that type of car for their kid. I think Anand is somewhere in his 20s but I have the feeling that when he pulls up in the dealership he has a pretty professional appearance going. There aren't a ton of well to do 20 something year olds out there but the salespeople recognize one when they see one.

It depends on you and the dealership. My dad sells cars "Chryslers, Dodges" and they dont just let anybody who walks in test drive any car on the lot. I dont know about this particular place but two young guys pull up in a ten year old sports car and ask for the keys to a 35k vehicle where my dad works they wouldn't do it. Most places the dealer tags are registerd through the company to that salesman meaning they are responsible for that vehicle that they are on.
