When I had a Gigabte UD5, I would get BSOD from COD:WAW. On my current mobo, I was playing L4D and for the first time my monitor lost signal, got a BSOD, and the pc shut down. I've played L4D a ton and this never happened before. I looked at the .dbg file and sure enough it was from nvlddmkm. I wanted to update to 185 but everytime I do I lose the Control Panel. So I tried 186 beta and I still lost my Contol Panel. Now I'm back to 182. ATI 5xxx better be good.

it sounds like a driver conflict if you went directly from ATi to Nvidia

did you *thoroughly* remove all ATi drivers ?

if driver sweeper does not work at this point - worst comes to worst - you might consider a completely new install of your OS

i know you do not want to hear this; sometimes it happens

I had an x850xt on my old pc. I can run all my games fine including L4D though, I'm just traumatized by that experience last night. When are the next drivers coming out?

nV drivers have had issues with L4D since the game came out.
I have tried countless versions; they are all broken in some way for L4D.

Trust me, you'll develop a serious hatred for nV's drivers if you play a lot of L4D.

I've been fighting with L4D crashing, audio looping, freezing, & other issues with my GTX 280 since i got the game.
Over half a year of bullshit.

I finally got fed up & i just installed my new solution today.

Ok that's what I thought. Funny thing is I'm replying while playing L4D. :) Next card will be
ATI for sure.

Great to hear.

Unfortunately, many of us nVidia owners aren't so lucky as you.

BtW, perfect solution for you with a 4890; i like mine also
- are we going to hear from you about ATi drivers next?

Look at all the issues...you'll find the common theme is nVidia.
I've tried all the fixes & more...nothing truely works.

Quite possibly :D

I always seem to have some issue with some game with my video cards.

Actually, i have one already.

Alt tabbing in UT3 is pretty much broken with ATi :frown:
But the thing is, i can deal with that.
Having L4D lock up/audio loop to death during the middle of an epic versus battle is insanely frustrating.

UT3 not alt tabbing, heh, i can live it.

I've never had problems with nvidia at all til the current drivers, which admittedly are pretty crappy. Other than that nothing but stability. Definitely don't judge nvidia too much by this round

Are you sure you removed all traces of the previous driver? I've owned both Nvidia and ATI and never had a problem like you are experiencing. I use Driver cleaner when switching video cards.

I've had crashes with both types of cards. If cleaning your drivers doesn't help you, you probably have a bad card.

I had BSOD hardware related crashs, on a NV 6800gt, ATI 9600pro, NV laptop 8600m and a ATI 4870.

Although drivers can crap out on you, never second guess the hardware.

edit: oops on the 9600

You can selectivly choose certain games to pick apart the drivers of either ATI or Nvidia (and then say "See, ATI's/Nvidia's drivers suck!"). No driver set from either company is going to work flawlessly with all games. They never have and never will. The best you can do is take the time to file a bug report with them and hope for a fix.

I've had numerous cards from both camps and neither one has been unreliable from a driver standpoint consistently.

I've had my share of crashes but have typically solved by reevaluating system and card oc's, and sometimes system voltages. With Crysis for example, I had to bump my cpu voltage a bit. Shader overclocks seem more sensitive in some games. As always, adjustments to stock on everything then increase gradually.

Latest updates, clean driver installs, etc. I update my nV drivers as they become certified but have never used driver cleaners. I uninstall, then regedit out nVidia entries. Works for me.

Surprised this thread hasn't already crashed and burned. Thumbs up for not..

I have had a whole mess of video cards from both ATi and nVidia over the last 15 or so years. The only time I ever do a driver "wipe" before installing new is if I change camps. Just an upgrade of drivers or even changing from a 9800GTX to GTX 260 for example I have never bothered with cleaning out the old.

Your system certainly does not exceed 600W demand. But regarding the PSU - there are 600W powersupplies and 600W powersupplies. If you've read any of the PSU roundups on the main AT page you will know that not all models can even live up to the label on the side, let alone have any safety margin. And many do not provide "smooth" current - if this happens, it may dip below the level needed by the system for a moment - and boom, problems.

Personally on a high end system like you've got I would want a bit more PSU for peace of mind if nothing else. Grab the Corsair 650TX for around $70-80 (depending on the deal you find).

Everyone always recommends using driver cleaner when there are problems...does this actually do anything? I'm sure it can't hurt...but I have never done this and switched through multiple cards on the same install. The only BSOD I recall happening was due to a dust clogged fan on a hot day. I'm curious if this has ever actually fixed a problem. Frankly, I don't see much reason why it would...I've run ati and nvidia cards in the same PC briefly before and they shouldn't be using eachothers drivers. I could see an outdated driver file for the same brand possibly causing a problem, but that would likely be pretty consistent and is really more an installer problem.

Which nvidia card did you get?
Edit: I see a GTX260 216. I have a 4850, want to trade?

CCC should be illegal and the writers put in jail. I never install it anymore because apparently its only purpose is to cause BSOD or driver failures.

are you kidding?

CCC is a decent control panel - equivalent to Nvidia's [now]
= what you are describing is 2900XT era

BtW, i found issues with my GTS 250, Geforce 185.85 and Source Engine

I have installed CCC with every driver release since I got this 4870 and have never had a problem with XP or Vista 64.

Infact, I've yet to have an AMD driver related issue since my 2900 that I can think of. I've used Nvidia plenty and can't think of any major problems I ran into with them either. <shrug>

Bugs happen. If you don't report them and follow through with troubleshooting procedures, they won't ever be fixed.

Uh no I am not kidding. I made a thread about this last fall after my purchse of a 4850. After some digging the consensus on the interwebs was to unsintall CCC. I did that and look, no more BSOD or driver failure mid game. CCC is a terrible piece of shit.

Looks like you've got some strange hardware issue, or maybe you're just unlucky. CCC has never made my system crash since I got my 4850. It was slow and resource hungry back when I first got my X1900XT, but nowadays it comes up almost instantaneously.
