I've always had ATI cards and was frustrated from CCC so I decided to try Nvidia. While I like the control panel better, the drivers are aweful. When I had a Gigabte UD5, I would get BSOD from COD:WAW. On my current mobo, I was playing L4D and for the first time my monitor lost signal, got a BSOD, and the pc shut down. I've played L4D a ton and this never happened before. I looked at the .dbg file and sure enough it was from nvlddmkm. I wanted to update to 185 but everytime I do I lose the Control Panel. So I tried 186 beta and I still lost my Contol Panel. Now I'm back to 182. ATI 5xxx better be good.

Yeah, I've definitely had more crashes from nvidia, but the CCC is still a POS that needs to die. Seriously, it is interfered with by spyware, older cpus, virus scanners, outdated versions of .net, admin restrictions, and just about everything that could be installed on a system not belonging to a power user.

Good thing I'm a power user, lol.

While CCC is annoying, BSOD's really make me angry. I wanted to keep this card for at least 3 years but Nvidia has really made me mad. Plus CCC can be replaced ATI Tray Tools.

Eh, it happens. I find that cards generally work on both sides of the camp. On my desktops I've had: ATi 9600SE, nVidia 6600GT, ATi x850 XT, ATi HD 4830, and ATi 4890.

The only one I had a problem with was the 4830, for some reason it would not work with my previous desktop whatsoever. I ended up returning the card and scrapping that desktop.

They're rare but they happen.

I had tons of issues with locking up and bsods, half the time was nv.dll or whatever. Turned out my cpu voltage was drooping more than it used to.

no crashes ever with nvidia drivers. only issue I have with ATI is they seem too screw up many games with missing objects and such. I know I gave ATI 3 chances with different drivers and the missing fences in Clear Sky and the inability to force vsync in Dead Space were never fixed. went back to Nvidia and thats likely where I will stay. I will still recommend ATI cards because they are awesome for the money but my own experience makes me stay with Nvidia for now.

agreed

it is usually the user who is at fault; or the PC .. RARELY is it the driver; and you can always roll back to a stable one .. if you cannot find one, then the fault is not the drivers

I drove a Pinto, it sucked. I'll never drive a Ford again!

Seriously, I've had many many Nvidia and ATI cards and never had serious issues, and that's with Windows XP, Vista and 7 in 32 and 64 bit variants.

Your install is a clean or an old one? Are all your other drivers up to date? Windows is fully updated too?

It's surely something else.

Like I said, it is the first time I've ever had a problem. It only happened once out of all the hours I've put into L4D. I have a clean install. Windows is fully updated. Could the problem be that I install drivers on top of eachother? Like I didn't like 185 so installed 182 over it.

I think you need a better power supply...

http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

This is just calculated with what you listed in your signature, I'm assuming you probably have something extra in a PCI slot like a soundcard and 1 or more USB devices which would mean even more wattage usage over this already high ammount.

When I got my GTX280 I was frustrated from the BSODs I was getting. I found out that my card could not reliable handle the overclock speeds it was sold at. So, I flashed the BIOS to slow clock speeds (reference GTX280) and now it works fine. I am not interested in an RMA for a mere 5%. So please, before you blame it on nVidia, rule out a defective card first. But - for the record - I know how frustrating it is to deal with those BSODs, especially when coming from a card that works solid.

I've never had a problem with the CCC or ATI, IMO it's great and you are nuts if you don't use CCC. I did have some minor problems with Nvidia back when I had my 8800GTX but nothing too bad. When people have driver issues most of the time it's an error between keyboard and chair and that someone has not correctly diagnosed the problem. Try a clean install, use Driversweeper to remove any remnants of old drivers after uninstalling your current one and try again.

You have four physical processors selected, he only has one physical processor, albeit with 4 cores.

Well it's not factory overclocked and the card isn't defective. Again, I only experienced this just last night. I debugged the BSOd report using Windbg and it said it is related to nvlddmkm. Then I checked the BCCode and I read that 116 is related to Nvidia.

Nvidia video drivers have been know to
cause a STOP with a BCCode of 116, so I would see about updating them first.

http://forums.techarena.in/win...performance/704917.htm

BCCode 116 (or 0x00000116) is usually video driver related. You may need to
reinstall or update yours with a fresh set from the manufacturer.

It could be. Not sure, but then I was never too tidy when dealing with older/newer drivers. Never used DriverCleaner or whatever it's called, just stacked them over and over again.
Never had any issues. This with everything from a 7600GT to a 8800GTX and a 3870.

It's odd. Maybe your mobo/chipset has a story of compatibility issues with that card? I dunno, 9.6 Catalysts didn't like my 4670 in Win XP (Got stuck with 640x480x4 bits. Really pretty on a 20 inch LCD), but in Windows 7 they did.

You should try a full cleanup of Nvidia drivers, then install the older ones first and see how it goes.

Kakkoii, your calculations say he's using 4 physical CPUs, but he's only using one (the i7 920 may be quad-core, but it's still one physical CPU). Those figures are overestimating.
