Great Tests and benchmarks PSOLORD. Good to see the 5850's can still hold their own. Just with a single 7950 I have to enable VSYNC with every game I play(Except Crysis 3) The tearing can get on my nerves. For some reason Crysis 3 doesn't tear with High frame-rates and when I enable Vsync it drops me to 30 FPS -- :(

Thanks mate. :)

True, those 5850s, although being 4 years old now, can provide some good gaming experience with sensible settings.

Yeap, tearing and 30fps is very annoying for me as well. That's why I always buy the second best gpu of the running generation, but two of them. It has worked well for me so far.

Still a single 7950 can cope with it at 60fps I believe, if you tone down the settings a bit. It should be doable at high settings. Haven't tested yet.

I built a gaming system for someone before Christmas with this card in it. He has since decided he doesn't game enough to warrant such a high end card and wanted to sell it on Ebay.

7950s can be purchased for ~ £215 brand new with Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinite bundle and I explained that with this in mind he would get maybe £150-£160 on Ebay for a second hand one with no bundle. I offered him £120 stating eEbay, postage and Paypal fees would knock ~£30 off that. He said OK and now I'm pulling my hair out working around CF issues.

:)

Oh I know you so mugged him - but awesome deal I'm tossing between the 7870 TX and 7950.....price difference seems to be about 40....

I'm going from 6870 with custom cooler :)

The 314.21 driver shot nVidia Tomb Raider performance through the roof. 1080p-Ultimate Preset-TressFX on for reference.

Funny...so NVIDIA isn't GPGPU limited...foot-in-mouth syndrome once again ;)

TressFX uses just OIT e simulation physics via Direct Compute API present in DX11. GPGPU is a much more abrangent term so I don't see the correlation.

doesn't look like AMD designed the game to run like crap on nVidia either. All they needed was the final game code and all is well. To bad PhysX doesn't work the same.

The hell? Why is everyone posting scores 5x higher than mine? Fully max'd out, everything on, TressFX, 4x SSAA, etc at 1440p, I'll only average 15fps. CPU is a little slow, I've only got an i5 2400, Radeon 7950 2GB, 16GB of RAM. Using Cat 13.1s right now though . . . maybe the new 13.3 Betas will bring that up a little?

TR looks good, but not good enough to thrash my hardware like this.

Installed the latest betas. There was also a game patch yesterday. I set shadows to Ultra (new setting). Benchmark says 34.5 FPS average.

I finished the game earlier today and had a blast (95% completion). All maxed, FXAA and TressFX ON at 1080p and the experience was flawless for me. There was a slowdown or two during one or two cutscenes, but the game itself was perfect for me.

All in all I'm happy :) A wonderful game with amazing visuals and great gameplay & story. And it all played great on my PC :)

Well yeah, the latest Nvidia and AMD betas contain fixes for Tomb Raider, and the latest benchmarks are done using those, so it's a pretty solid assumption that 13.3 would boost your framerates too. Also, make sure your game is patched to the latest version.

Nobody is using SSAA.

Ultimate preset = FXAA

You have to select SSAA and ULTRA SHADOWS manually.

Not bad for that CPU. Once you get that taken care of you'll really let the 7950 stretch it's legs.

Catalyst 13.3 came out last Friday, which had some Tomb Raider optimizations. You should use that driver and see if your score improves.

Probably has to do with the fact the driver didn't increase performance, but reduced frame time latency.

@Durvelle27 what does 100% fan speed sound like on that DD?

It's kind of a shame I beat this game already before any driver optimizations. I almost want to play through it again... almost.

I have the Steam version, so I assume its being patched automatically through Steam. I installed the 13.3 Betas, and saw exactly the same performance. Around 26-27 fps @1440p with Ultimate presets.

SSAA is the better looking, more performance demanding, is it not?
